Rear window rubber seal

Hi guys,

Has anyone got a good suggestion on how to get the rear window rubber seal on to the glass? We've now tried about 40 times with no luck. Each time we get about a third on it just slips off!!
So far we have tried having the window clean and dry and pushing it on, using soapy string, soaping up the rim of the glass and all to no avail.
This part of all the tutorials I've read through is just 'fit the rubber to the glass and then start the real work' - if this is the easy part of refitting the window then I'm in trouble...

Haha I wouldn't have thought it would have been much of a problem fitting the rubber to the glass haha I have all window rubbers ready for when I can do mine but I did my friends rear window on his 190e simply fitted the rubber on no problem it was the trim that I had to fit which was the pig thankfully we have non

Maybe it's just trail and error till you find your own little method of getting it on the glass lol

Yeah, I wasn't expecting such an adventure with it either. We've got the rubber on a slightly warm radiator at the moment to see if that makes it a little more persuadable

Yeah give that a shot lol I'd have thought you'd be able to just push it round 3 sides
Either get someone to hold it on or tape it on the screen whilst you do the final side lol

Well we finally managed it with 3 people!! It just kept slipping off as soon as you stopped holding a section.

Now the next problem is fitting it to the car. Our first attempt has not gone well

And fitting get some rope that fits in the groove of the rubber where the metal would sit in.
Wrap it round in the groove and at the buttom where they meat cross them over
Put the glass up to the car with the rope inside of the car
Get someone to stand on the outside and push against the glass
Someone inside to slowly and evenly pull the rope round
Pulling 1 rope a little and then the other whilst the other person is still pushing the glass down

When replacing the rubber seal on the back window of our '61, we found it easier to put the glass in from the inside rather than from the outside.

Try using washing line instead of rope/string - the type that is coloured plastic with the rope inside. This will stop the rope from cutting into the rubber seal.

I stripped our old washing line of its line yesterday. Our new problem is getting the window (and rubber) pressed up to the car enough to get the rubber seal to fit. I think it's just too cold and not supple enough. So on Friday I'll bring the fan heater and hair dryer out to the garage to have another go.

As Katy suggests, you'll need to fit the rear windscreen from INSIDE the car, pulling the string from OUTSIDE. It'll need two people: one inside, pushing and one outside, pulling the string. Another thing to be aware of is that there can be sharp spotwelds around the aperture which can tear the rubber as you pull it through the gap. It might be worth checking for these first and cleaning them up with a file? Do use some of lubricant on the rubber to ease the process....

Good luck. I fitted a new rubber to my saloon last year. First one simply wouldn't fit properly whatever we tried . Bought another rubber, tried again and job was done in minutes I'm not sure if there are good and bad rubbers but personally I've found success with those supplied by C O H Baines Ltd who seem to produce a good quality product.

We've tried a few times so far with little success. We tried starting at the top, bottom and from the sides. We actually got the furthest starting from the sides, but alas, still no luck. A warm garage and hair dryer seems to help with keeping the rubber a little more pliable.
I think we're close to admitting defeat and bringing it to a specialist.

I had trouble fitting my rear screen, I found out that warming the rubber as you are helped. I also found that once you got past a certain point hardly any pressure was required from the inside and instead a small amount of pressure was needed at the point the rope was at to help it pull through.

It is FINALLY in! There are one or two small slits that happened along the way, but there is no chance that we're taking it out and putting another in. That was, without a doubt, the worst job we've done on any of our cars.

You think that is difficult, have you tried fitting the front screens on a split screen?

This is interesting task, we purchased a new rear windscreen rubber from EMS, must have tried to install without success many many many times
without success. Finally emailed EMS stating the issue we had issues just getting the rubber onto the glass heated unheated, with without lube
finally got it on heated and held in place with boogoo tape. Then the issue was that the rubber could not lay flat onto the glass but twisted mainly on the round ends. This is late 1960 MM1000. nothing I mean nothing one could do would permit the bottom to get down to the frame close enough to even start the pulling of the cord for install. Conclusion was the rubber seal either too firm or was manufactured improperly. EMS informed us they have been selling this seal for 10years without issues. they would either send a replacement (not comfortable with that idea) or issue a refund??? We did order a TRIM LOK Mfr # LK1660-25 seal waiting for this to arrive will then advise Not a OEM design but similar and seeming to be functional that would be a thousand times easier to install.
