Split Screen Moggy Window Wipers

Post by Mr Poddington »

Hi all, I had my window wiper motor reconditioned a coupe of weeks ago and all was working fine. Today I was cleaning my windscreen by hand, and pushed the drivers side wiper up the screen by about 6 inches (really didn't think it through - one of those Uh Oh moments when I'd realised what I'd done...) We tried to correct it, tried to get it balanced out. To start with the passenger side was working fine, now after about 20 minutes of trying to get them both running neither side is working. Have I completely wrecked it? If not what would be the best way of getting it working again? I'm really worried, can't really afford to recondition the motor again... if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated!!

Are the arms loose on the spindles ?? Best to tell us where you are - a fellow owner may be nearby and willing to pop over to have a look.

Did you replace the motor mounting plate with the three rubber mountings?
Slaken the wiper arm clamp nuts and remove the arms.
Switch wipers on and check that spindles are turning. If ok then stop motor when spindles are at max rotation towards the centre of the screen.
Replace arms and tighten clamp nuts.
Wet windscreen and test. If wipers do not move together stop motor and slacken nut and adjust arm
If one arm is moving further than the other then remove glove boxes, and inst panel on early Series II, to get access to rack and gear cogs
Check that there is no free play at the ends of the rack casing, if there is then tighten bolts that clamp wiper rack to gear wheel wheel casing and test. Always keep the screen wet to avoid damaging the rack.
If wipers are still not moving evenly then remove gear wheels and inspect teeth. If worn then rotate gear wheel 180 deg and replace.
Inspect rack and if damaged then replace

Please note that the split screen wiper system is different to the later wipers so if you are not familiar with the early system please do not comment

Who 'reconditioned' the wiper motor - and who fitted it back on the car ??

Its possible that you have disloged the drive mech (under the dash)from the spindle boxes, If you have no drive with the arms off(as suggested above) ,take the glove box liners out and you will see where the metal tube runs from the motor to the spindle boxes(Take it yours ser11 is standard with the motor under the dash drivers side) goes to the drivers side then across to the passenger sindle. You will see that the tube is clamped onto the boxes,if you have disloged the tube ,the drive just flops about and dosen't drive the spindles. If so just refit the tube and re clamp Also worth turning the drive spindle over 90% to engage unworn side(It may allready have had this done, common cure for floppy wiper arms)It's unlikely that you have damaged the motor, takes a bit more that that.GOOD LUCK.
