Series 2 clutch return spring

Post by vee12jag »

Hi guys,
I'm rebuilding a 56 series 2. In putting the clutch pedal assembly back together, some of the reference drawings I'm looking at show a clutch pedal return spring as well as a brake pedal return spring. However, in looking at the Morris Minor Service parts book, it does not show a clutch pedal return spring.
I cannot figure out where a clutch pedal return spring would fit so I have concluded there should not be one. Is this assumption correct?
Thanks in advance.

There is no return spring inside the chassis leg as per the brake pedal.
The spring is fitted as per the illustration attached:-[frame]Image[/frame]

There must be a clutch return spring otherwise the carbon thrust could be against the clutch over at all times which would lead to rapid wear of the carbon thrust and clutch cover thrust pad.

Beg to differ Phil, but there is a spring attached to the brake pedal inside the chassis leg, It`s the return spring which pulls the pedal back from the Master Cylinder.
I remember removing the spring unnessersarily when I replaced the Master Cylinder, it took ages to put back on because the gap is so narrow to get in :D

Richard
The above question was regarding the clutch pedal not the brake pedal and which In my post above acknowledges that there is a return spring Pt No: AAA599 pulling back the brake pedal. Quote "There is no return spring inside the chassis leg as per the brake pedal" unquote.
Having owned a series 2 and having replaced the original brake/clutch pedal I can assure that there is no return spring inside the chassis leg pulling on the clutch pedal. Yes there is a spring pulling on the brake pedal.
Attached is an extract from the Morris wksp manual and it can be determined that there is no clutch pedal return spring inside the chassis leg. There is a return spring Pt No: AAA1628 listed on the MOSS parts list a clutch fork return spring, item No: 198 on the attached illustration.
Listed in the MOSS clutch linkage parts section there is a additional spring Pt No: 1G5999 which may? be fitted as an additional spring on later Minors but if it is fitted it is outside the chassis leg (never had one fitted on my 1958 M1000).
It may be a mistake and should be listed as the brake pedal return spring who knows?
Additionally there is no bracket on the clutch pedal shaft fitted to early or late cars to accept a pedal return spring within the chassis leg.

Thanks for the input guys. It does seem odd to me that there is a brake pedal return spring but no clutch pedal return spring.
It does answer the mystery of where to put it though!
Of course I do have the spring up by the gearbox.
Thanks again
