MG Metro camshaft

Post by welshrat »

Finally managed to pick up a fairly good MG Metro cam (I hope, sure you will let me know if i have bought a wrong un), will this cam drop straight into the 1275 midget motor that I am having rebuilt or do I need to consider any modifications, valves etc?[frame]Image[/frame]

You're right enough there - well done - these are like hens' teeth these days. :D Straight fit - will work best with large inlet valve head (but not essential) and a single HIF 44 on a good ally inlet.

Thanks for the comment, I was fairly confident that I had the right one but was questioning myself as managed to pick it up for just twenty notes on the bay of E's. Running a standard midget 1275 head, guess thats OK then?

You got a bargain then....i've not seen one on ebay for ages! The Midget head should have the larger valves - measure and see!

Existing cam is a spider drive, this cam is a slot, read your comments on a different post about long and short slot oil pumps, what pump should I be looking to purchase?

The Spridget 1275 had the smaller inlet valve size 1.3" - it was the Cooper 'S', MG1300 MkII, 1300 Riley Kestral and 1300 VDP that had the 'big' inlet valve of 1.4".

The oil pump should be a good quality 1275 slot drive, to match the cam.

Hahahaha - the whole point of an MG cam is that it is NOT 'high lift' - neither was it used in the Turbo engine.... You need the 'long' version of the spade drive pump. Take good care of that old spider - they are 'not common' these days. (but there is one on ebay). http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini- ... 4ae3d9b3ef

Whilst the description may not be right  the item is the same as purchased by welshrat (see cam ring/grove marking between cam lobe No: 1 & No: 2) and that is the important point. :D

Oh yes - it is an MG cam - that price is more representative of what has become the norm these days.

Not going to worry about swapping the head but am I correct in thinking that the casting numbers were the same (12G940) for the heads with 1.3 and 1.4 inlet valves and therfore is it just a case of measuring them?

Yes that's it - you can always swap the head later.
