Why are you connecting them together? Do you have an alternator fitted? If so, far neater, and easier, to just leave the regulator in place.
I suggest you put everything back where you found it. There is a wiring diagram at the top of this section which may be of use to you.
Are you changing wires round due to it being negative earth? None of those wires need to be touched to convert, only the battery terminal clamps and the coil wired need any attention (and the dynamo of course, though not from a wiring perspective).

The test connecting of A to A1 is to prove if the problem is the strap on the back of the Regulator box. Just use a short loop of wire - one end in A the other in A1....

i have connected all of the cables from A and A1 together, and although I managed to start the car off of the key, I could not turn the engine off with the key, and had to undo the cables that were connected to each other. Any ideas please?
Also, whilst the car was wired like this, the ignition switch light was permanently on, any ideas on how to sort this out too please?
And one last thing, are there any Morris Minor dealers in or around the South East London, North Kent areas please?

Also, is there any possibility that the problem might actually be the ignition switch?

And when A and A1 are not joined - there is no ignition light ? You have removed your jump lead ?? Joining A and A1 only provides power TO the Ign switch (if the link in the Regulator has failed) - so if the Ign comes on when you do that- then either the switch is ON - or there is a fault in the switch. Make sure you only have two BROWN wires on A and two BROWN/BLUE wires on A1.

I had that problem and think that that the earth side on the ignition switch end ups on the petrol pump connection so suggest check that run through. Also check that the control box has not been turned round.
