australian exports

Post by Chnnang »

i was reading an article about Morris production in Australia that said the traveller was never officially imported in Australia. it said there were quite a few there but they were private imports from the UK or New Zealand. anyone know any more about this or where i could find some information? i was aware the sedans etc came as complete knock downs at first with increasing local content but i thought the travellers were just imported complete. of course the article could be completely wrong. you guys seem to know everything so it's the best place to ask

Do not have any Factory data from Zetland, Sydney, but have been on the Morris Minor scene here in Melbourne for 40 yrs.....No Travellers were built here, and only the Tourers/Convertibles during Series MM and Series 2, nothing later. NZ seems to have been different.

It is my impression that any Traveller that IS here in Australia got here as a private import. Shame!

Re: Travellers found in Australia

Not imported officially, as far as I am aware, nor from my observation of the secondhand Traveller market.

Out in Australia they are scarce, and only come up as the occasional private import.

An acquaintance of mine sourced one into Melbourne out of NZ during the last decade simply because there were none to be found locally.

Did a shed load of work on Oz identity codes, no sign of "FL51" - not
to say there wasn't any though!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

This traveller was found on a farm in Victoria in a dismantled state. Engine and other bits are inside the traveller.
The photo was taken at the Mount Gravatt Showground at a combine gathering of the various MM clubs around Brisbane 17.10.1998.
Unfortunately I do not have any details of the Traveller  [frame]Image[/frame]
