Right indicator not working

Post by Offshore »

Hi guys. Happy New Year to you all.

Not posted for a while as the house was being refurbished. At least Martha has a new roof on the garage which has also been rewired. No central heating though - herself wouldn't allow it although I can sleep in the garage if I want yo apparently.

Anyway the right indicator failed to operate earlier this week. There was a loud ish click and nothing. Not checked anything yet and couldn't get the front lense off in the office car park so it's a weekend job.

The left indicator also packed up before that. Experience has shown that the left side not working means battery needs top up after winter driving. Did that and left is now fine and reliable.

Indicator stalk lights up fine with the left but nothing at all with the right.

An unprecedented amount of burglaries these last couple of weeks and very highly visible police presence. Having no wish to waste their time and attract their attention where do I start looking?

Tried turning steering wheel lock to lock a couple of times but no change.

Cheers

Is it front and rear Rhs indicators? If only one has failed it's likely a bulb or a poor contact.

I agree, check all bulbs and connections.
The flasher unit will not operate correctly without a 42 watt load ( 2 good 21w bulbs) to generate enough heat to throw the thermal switch.

And if bulbs etc are all ok try a new flasher unit. Dead easy to fit but bear in mind that some of the modern ones are faulty from new!

Hi guys

Thanks for the prompt replies. Neither right side works nor does the indicator stalk light when operated.

I'll have a look at the bulbs at the weekend swapping them in the LHS and report back.

DO NOT touch the flasher unit....if it works on the left it will be fine for the right... If both front and rear not working - most likely a wire off/broken at the stalk - or a fail in the stalk itself...

As roy says, the unit is ok its just a switch which inturupts power to the indicator stalk,if one side is ok then its as above.

Ah! Yes, all my indicators had gone when the flasher can packed up. Took 3 visits to the motor factors before I got one that worked.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Try this for size - when I got to the car last night after work I turned the ignition on and the right indicator started flashing. I must have left the stalk in the down position when turning the steering wheel lock to lock looking for loose connections that morning when I arrived at work.

Both lots performed faultlessly all the way home.

Car is in the garage today as we have bad weather forecast out here. Will have a look at the switch over the weekend and report back.

Probably a poor switch contact.
