Sun visor clip

I have a replacement sun visor clip (since the other one has deteriorated, and I obviously don't want the visor to fall down while driving.) to remove the old one, should I drill into the plastic pin?

In terms of painting the surrounding area (to stop rust), is it just a case of painting new paint, or should I remove any existing paint, etc?

You can just punch the centre pin through. It will fall into the channel behind, but the rest of the clip will remove cleanly.

Thanks! So out of sight out of mind, and might be recovered in 40 years time? Should I repaint around the hole first where it's bare metal?

Painting certainly won't do any harm, bare metal should always be protected to minimise the risk of rust. When fitting the new clips, the centre pin will be protruding between the jaws of the clip, and after fitting the clip into position, will need to be punched flush with the face of the body, as you'll see on the old one. Be careful not to punch too hard, or it will go through. When pushed in, the pin splays the retaining part of the clip, a bit like a rawlplug splays out. All quite obvious when you see the new clip.

If you want to retain the centre pin ,drill a very small hole in the centre of the pin and use a small chipboard screw in a pair of vise-grips screw it a small way in and pull, the pin should pull out

Thanks for the advice. Me being me, I manage to push the new pin in as well on the last tap. Oops! At least the pins will have company...
