1962 indicators upgrade
I bought a 1962 project car which came with indicators on the rear and the sidelight/indicator combo on the front.having read some posts on this forum,i discovered that these were an upgrade and that originally the front sidelights flashed and the rear red lights flashed.I dislike the indicators on the rear and would prefer the original look - orange clashes with paintwork anyway !.
Is it feasible to return the rear lights to flash as indicators, use halogen headlamps which incorporate the sidelight on the front and use clear front sidelights with orange bulbs as indicators ? will it be a wiring nightmare ?
Pete

You'll need the relay box to interrupt the brake lights - or make up a system of relays to do the job - it's been covered a few times. Try the Search facility!

BUT be prepared for other drivers regularly hooting at you, shaking their fists and shouting because they didn't realise that the interrupted red brakelight was your direction indicator
.
I soon got fed up with that arrangement on mine and fitted orange flashers just like the previous owner of your car has done!

I have to agree with that one ! Unless you supplement your intentions with hand signals - which was the norm 'back in the day'.

Re: 1962 indicators upgrade
I don't know what your current set up on the rear is (later style light units with indicators incorporated or wing-mounted Orange indicators?), but for me with my '62 saloon, I found a good compromise was making up some brackets which are mounted to the rear bumper mounts, and mounting orange indicators on them, below the bumper. They're very visible, and that way you can keep the original rear light lenses and of course you could always change it back to the original set up if you wanted. I know some people have done what you suggest with the front indicator arrangement, but I've not bothered, as I found that the front ones are generally noticed (even though they're white) - it's the flashing red lights at the red that other motorists seem to struggle with, especially if you're braking and indicating simultaneously

Re: 1962 indicators upgrade
the car had the orange indicators added when i got it and they look terrible(matches the current state of the car )[frame]

looks by the comments ,it will be best to put some type of indicator on rear.either clear ones same as front side sidelights with orange bulbs or mount some motorcycle indicators in the chrome bumper so there not too obvious(until they flash).I don't like the later rear lights (don't like orange indicators).

Sorry to hijack the thread but its relevant. What year was a flashing clear front indicator no longer applicable?

hi . on my 55 series 2 for the front i fitted the latter model clear indicator / sidelight unit which looks identical to the side light only unit and fits without modifying the wing , and on the rear i fitted a 21w small halogen bulb at the top of the standard light unit to be the brake light and rewired the original stop light to be the indicator and retained the original side light , a standard later model flasher unit works fine and is connected to the std trafficator switch but disconnect the trafficators or they will flap up and down as the indicators flash !! , it only needs a couple of extra wires to be run , i use my car for all my local driving and i have not had any problems with other drivers but to be fair i always indicate early
Re: 1962 indicators upgrade
Mine had the wings with the hole for the later orange units.I welded the holes up to fit the dual clears you mention.

By using two flasher units, one on each supply to the lights from the switch, and linking the trafficators to the line in front of each unit you can get the lights flashing and the trafficators working at the same time, thinking about re installing mine like this. You've obviously got to supply straight to the switch, since the normal unit interupts power to the switch.martin418 wrote: disconnect the trafficators or they will flap up and down as the indicators flash !! ,
