Warm Hub Cap on Rear Off Side

Post by chrisgriffiths »

Hi Everyone,

I went for a run today, about 30 miles and when I got out of the car I noticed that the rear off side hub cap was warm to touch. Has anyone one any ideas as to what I should be checking.

I assume that it might be a sticking brake or rear bearing. How should I check

Cheers

Chris

That's it - seized up rear cylinder - or possibly over adjusted handbrake cable if you have dome them recently ?

OK Cheers

I did adjust the brakes a few weeks ago. Should I have disconnected the handbrake before I adjusted them, Don't know if that sounds daft

Yes - you need to slacken off the handbrake cables before adjusting the internal cams... However - I do think the cylinder will be seized - best to investigate.

Jack up the axle and check that the wheel turns freely. Check that the handbrake cable moves freely and operates the lever on the back of the cylinder. Oil or grease the ends of the cables.
Support both rear wheels clear of the ground, remove the wheels, release the handbrake and adjust the rear brakes. Replace the wheels and pull the handbrake on. Check that both wheels are locked and if necessary adjust the cable on the side that is not locked. Release the handbrake one notch and check that the resistance is the same on both sides, adjust as necessary
