Fan Belt

Post by MacD »

Hello
Have just fitted new fan belt and started engine.... everything seems o.k. but when having a final look I've noticed that down at the pulley at the crank it looks as if the belt could fit round the front channel where I have it on the one immediately behind.
Sorry for being a numpty but which one is correct?

The standard pulley has only one belt channel. Twin channel pulleys usually run two belts for other equipment.
If yours has two set the belt in the position which gives a straight run without the belt twisting or running at an angle. :D

There should only be one channel in the pulley for the fan belt to fit in.Sitting in the " V " shape.

If for whatever reason you have two ( most unusual ) then it must be put on the one that keeps the fan belt in a straight line
i.e. that is ..looking from the driver's side wing, into the engine bay, visually line up the three pulleys.Water pump, dynamo or
alternator ( if fitted ) and the bottom main crank pulley.
Adjust the tension once you are happy with the straight line run of the fan belt.If you don't get a straight line it will exert
unnecessary pressure on the bearings of the water pump and dynamo/alternator and will chew up the belt itself, prematurely.

Most bottom pulleys look like this so no chance of getting it wrong.[frame]Image[/frame]
