Crankshaft Damper

Hi Guys,

I've read on here that it's a good idea to fit a crankshaft damper to the Minor, and as I'm in the process of warming it up with a 12G940 head etc., I'd like to fit one.
I've been struggling to find one for a Morris Minor, but does anyone know if this one for a mini would fit?

I want to fit it on a 1965 Morris 1000 with a 1098 engine.

They are all the same (Part No: 88G305) whether fitted to a Mini, Metro or Midget or upgraded 1098cc Minor engine.
I had one fitted on my Minor - So yes it will fit. Ignore the comment about the engine mounting as that only refers to the Mini engine mounting. Fitting the damper pulley is one of the best upgrades you can make.

Before I go for the mini one, does anyone have any experience of using the viscous one from KAD.
If so, are there any real benefits over the rubber one?

There's a pretty hefty price difference, so I was wondering if it's justifiable.

Whilst KAD are a very good firm when it comes to after market tuning parts it does seem an excessive outlay (£252) for a crankshaft damper suitable for a slightly modified 1098 cc engine.
You will get no proportional increase in benefit relative to cost over the damper available from Bullmotif at £104.34.
So is it justifiable? To me NO. But do not let me put you off purchasing it if you so desire.
As I said above I have had a similar dampers to those available from Bullmotif fitted on my competition engines over the years and currently have the reduced weight two piece damper from Mini Spares Pt Nos: C-AEG454/12A367 with the special bolt Pt No: C-AHT147.
To sum up the Bullmotif crankshaft damper is more than adequate for your needs.

They come up on eBay quite regularly under 'Mini Damper Pulley', but make sure that the rubber is in good condition.

Also worth searching under 'Classic Mini Pulley', as some do not include 'damper' in the description.

Should be around £20, or maybe less.

If you are desperate I have found a spare crankshaft damper that you can have for £20 ONO but I would want you to see it first so you can satisfy yourself that the rubber is ok. I am in mid Hampshire.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's just been nagging at the back of mind and I wondered if there was something that justified the price.

I note that the two 'e' bay damper pulleys have the timing plates still attached. The plate can be easily removed by knocking out the rivets if necessary.
Removing the thin tin plate will not upset the balance as the plate is circular and is held by an equally balanced number of rivets.

Is the ESM offering actually a 'harmonic damper' - with the outer ring mounted in heavy duty rubber ? Or is it just a solid steel pulley... certainly better than a thin riveted pulley - but no 'damping' effect. The Bull Motif damper looks fine....although quite pricey!!

The picture looks like it has the rubber, but it doesn't say anything about it. They are out of stock anyway, although significantly cheaper.

No - the ESM pulley is just solid steel. I broke two 948 cranks (many moons ago) until I fitted a damper from an early Morris 1100 engine.

bmc - The reason I queried your ESM reference re crankshaft damper is that I could not find a crankshaft damper listed on their spares web site only their solid crankshaft pulley. A crankshaft damper may be lurking somewhere else as some of their parts do but I used their search facility and it did not come up.
There does not appear to be a earlier reference to yours regarding ESM crankshaft pulleys in these posts only those supplied by Bullmotif, KAD and those on 'e' bay and I could not make the connection between those and ESM.
