Running in an engine

Post by yellowpinky »

I've just had my 1275 engine rebuilt... I just wanted to check how many miles to drive before its first oil change? I've done just over 1000 miles with it so far... It would be convenient to do it now??

i believe the general practice is 500 miles and then 1000 and then as normal there after, happy to be corrected but that is what i understand anyway.

Kind Regards

Scott

Ok... Cool... I'd better spin a new filter on today. I noticed the oil level had gone down a little. I'm concerned about this.. But I then read running in is sometimes called burning in which suggests it's gonna use a big of oil to start with. I certainly hope so... Ang thoughts ??

Definitely needs an oil and filter change now. What oil are you proposing to use?

How much oil has it used in the first 1,000 miles? Anything up to about 1 litre would be in the 'normal' range for an A-Series engine.

I'm using the Classic castrol 20/50. It can't have used much more than a litre, but I'm a bit worried still as it should be 100% dare I say it

I agree with Richard in that you should change the oil and oil filter soonest. Personally I would have changed the oil and oil filter at 500 miles which is the recommended period for the use of engine oil during running in.
The consumption of 1 litre of engine oil in 1000 miles on a rebuilt 'A' series engine is not unusual; the oil consumption will get less as the rings and bore bed into each other.
