Windscreen washer and seal advice [monkey damage]

Post by nwxh »

Long story short (you can probably guess the venue), monkeys damaged my Morris Minor. [Actual monkeys, not the local residents]

1.The first issue is that part of the windscreen chrome insert [GLS111 *] has come out. What is the beast way to reseat it? It it just a case of using bicycle tyre levers to put it in?

2. The right washer spray is now a vertical jet. Which is the right part to put on top? I don't know if the left washer jet ever worked, as there is just a hole, but will have a look under the bonnet tomorrow. What parts would I need for this.

*Part code on http://www.morrisminorspareparts.co.uk

Many thanks!

Using a tyre level or screwdriver proved insufficient to get the chrome insert back in. Should I will try with a bigger screwdriver and rubber mallet, or purchase the official tool?

I've discovered it's not obvious how to get under where the washer jets come out. Is this doable? Is it likely only one of two holes ever had a jet in it, and I just need the part that goes on top?

Warming insert and rubber and plenty of fairy liquid(make sure you rinse off afterwards as apparently it contains salt). You havent included your location. If you were near me I could lend you the tool.To get at the nuts holding the jets in you'll need the gloveboxes out unless theres enough room with the sppedo pulled forward? These are they:

Thanks for the reply and offer. I'm in the South West. I assume the warming is best done with a hair dryer?

Can the glove boxes just be pulled out? Should be easy on the driver's side but not on the other side (radio installed). However I'm not sure whether or not there ever was a second washer jet on the left side (didn't ever try it out while it was in working order).

The jets are usually threaded with a locking nut on the underside although there were some that just pushed through from above with a plastic type spring clip.May be easier if you get an assistant to push the trim in as you open it up from both sides.Pretty sure it will be less faff by pulling the speedo forward though.Inside each glovebox theres a hole on the speedo side. You can get a screwdriver in and loosen the 2 machine screws holding the speedo head in(prob best to disconnect the battery first).Pull the head forwards and undo the speedo cable.Maybe even remove the warning lamps from their sockets.Plenty of room to get in now!

Did the Seal do any damage, or was it just the Monkeys?
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

Didn't see any seals, but I went quickly through the lion's den.

Thanks for the advice. I suspect the original jet(s) was/were clip on, hence easily removed. I'll have a poke behind the speedo to investigate, and look at getting some chrome jets.

In the meantime, what happens to water that falls through the hole? Will I get water collecting in front of the dash etc?

Yes, is it against animal cruelty to blast seals with a hair dryer and cover them in washing up liquid?

Depends how powerful the hair dryers are!

Do seals commit much vandalism in the West Country - few years ago, there were several garden
ponds near Wells which had to be fenced off due to gangs of seals causing anti-social behaviour,
spray painting "Kill the Whale" on garden walls etc.

Going back to the original problem, yes, any rain that falls on the holes will (probably) go through the holes and into the inside of the car behind the dashboard and cause damage to whatever is below. So that could include: the glovebox (made of a cardboard material that will go soggy and warp), the radio (all could go quiet), the electrics (which could either blow a fuse cutting off up to 50% of your electrics depending which one it blows), the parcelshelf (made of the same cardboard stuff as the glovebox) etc. So until you get the new washers, cover the holes with duck-tape or something (waterproof plasters will do). Or stay out of the rain. And don't wash it. Now there's a novel excuse!

I got the parts, so will try and fix it today. Only problem is the diameter of the pipe going to the electric jet is larger than what I have been given..

Dont understand if youre saying the pipes too narrow or wide?If too narrow put a hot air gun on it to soften it.Too small use a tie wrap.

The right glovebox was not screwed in and came out easily. The left has a convenient hole at the top. I managed to attach the new chrome jets to the car body, but will get a friend tomorrow to hold them while I tighten.

The chrome jets had a black rubber washer, which just fits into the hole. I assume this is correct, so the nuts attach either side with the rubber in the middle.

The provided piping was nice and snug but not to tight on the actual jets, so I'll fit in on in daylight tomorrow. I struggled to get it on the 3 way section, but dipped it in hot water (no heat gun) and am satisfied that they're on enough (just over the second lip, though I'd prefer another 2mm). I also got a one-way valve, which is wider than the three way, so I attached a very small piece of pipe between that and the three-way. I will connect this to the existing higher diameter pipe to the electric pump, and use vaseline and a cable tie if need be. Many thanks for all the suggestions.

I am looking into a brand of monkey which will switch my engine with another car. ;)

Finally got it sussed. Turns out there was originally a three-way adapter. Oops! Didn't find out until 3/4 of washer fluid dripped onto the floor. The radio seems unscathed but I'll keep it inside for a while jut in case. Ended up removing the left glove-box compartment (about 5 screws) and accessed the left side properly. Hopefully the car will dry overnight.

A brown cable with a spherical connect has been removed by mistake. I assume this must be for the radio since everything else is still working. Am I right to assume it connects to a way junction box with two brown wires already going in? Does it just clip in, or does it need some sort of solder etc? Many thanks!
