Solid heater water pipes

Post by roymck »

The solid water pipe that goes from the bottom hose over the inlet manifold to the heater rubber flexible hose comes in various shapes. How many different types are there and did they differ according to engine sizes? I have fitted twin carbs and the existing copper tube now hits on the top of the manifold I need a tube that has a 90dg bend at both ends. Whats that from?

Thanks Roy

Just use rubber pipe - as used on many many many Minis!

I could use rubber pipe but the metal hose is neater, so that's what I am trying to achieve .

There are two common variations: (a) up from the bottom hose, 90 degress backwards over the manifold and the anoth 90 upwards to the rubber; (b) Up from the bottom hose, 90 sideways over the thermostat, then another 90 backwards along the side of the head, about 1/2 way until it goes straight to rubber. Both available from autojumbles and probably club spares.

That's want I need type A .. 90dg from bottom hose then along side manifold then 90dg up to rubber hose join , NOT the type that goes over t/stat housing .

ANYBODY GOT ONE ?

Thanks Roy

Surely if the problem is that the tube is fouling the manifold / carb, then you need the type that goes over the thermostat to avoid the problem, or am I missing something? As well as autojumble and club spares as suggested previously, try Leadbetters as they can often offer good value second hand stock.

The best of both worlds may be available in purloining a metal braided rubber hose, any of the custom car sites will be able to help.

Can you not fit a longer rubber hose between the lower rad hose and the copper tube, to raise it up?

If you really must -make one from 15mm copper pipe! Why the 'twin carbs' anyway ?? Is the engine modified?

15mm copper pipe is really too large to fit to 1/2 rubber heater hose , yes it can be made to fit but its bad engineering practice and not recommended although I could make up the 15mm copper pipe I would be unable to make the copper pipe bend tight enough at the front edge.

Yes the car is modified 1275 cc with twin 1 1/4 su carbs.

This is what I am looking for . http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291287420982? ... EBIDX%3AIT

These carbs are far too small then for a 'modified' 1275. Remember - each cylinder only breathes through ONE 1 1/4 " carb - so you are restricting the air flow - there is NO cross flow between carbs - in fact that cross-link pipe intersection actually spoils the airflow where it meets the flow coming down from the carb.. You would be much better with a single HIF 44 (or 1 3/4 HS6) on a good alloy inlet manifold. And if you want to (although I don't recommend..) you can run the return heater flow through the water pipe on the manifold - thus also resolving your copper pipe problem! The answer to the 15mm pipe is of course to use a 5/8" pipe for the connections...

Bmcecosse and sorry I don't know you real name.

Once again you post your opinion that is not relevant to the thread , My car runs extremely well on twin SU's as did tens of thousands of BMC cars also did during period. Just for the sake of trying to find a suitable copper heater return pipe you recommend changing a perfectly good twin carb set up for a single carb. My engine has been on a rolling road and set up with suitable needles, Ram pipes, cold air intake with ITG filter. BMC fitted twin carbs to the Cooper S and that was a tuned version of the sprite engine in as much it had a big valve head and a more aggressive camshaft .

I don't post on here very often but when I do I can always rely on your negative irrelevant comments , so far you have posted on my thread 3 times with nothing positive to add about my search for the correct heater return pipe so no wonder your post count is so high. Previously when I have posted that I was looking for a 3.5 diff for my Morris and you immediately posted that no such ratio was available, even though you had posted negative comments on another forum when somebody was trying to sell such a diff. I ended up buying that very diff after much searching. You could have pointed me towards that seller but no you just posted that no such ratio existed. And then when you discovered that there was such a diff you deleted and edited your posts so you did not loose face. So you are no expert on all things Morris

So lets get back to keeping threads about the topic. You have manage to post your views about Single carb Vs Twin carbs onto a thread about Solid heater water pipes. Not relevant!

Those tiny twins ARE limiting your power ( BMC fitted these carbs because back in the day it was expected for 'Sports' cars to have twin carbs - and also as a power limiting feature on the road going cars to contain warranty claims - an immediate change to 1.5 carbs released an extra 10 bhp on the 1275 S ) I was simply pointing you to an improvement and a solution to the pipe problem - as was the rubber tube earlier comment which you dismissed arrogantly. I've still 'never' heard of a 3.5 ratio final drive (not 'diff') - except on your thread. I do have the pipe you so desperately require but it's not for sale. I'm so sorry to have upset you (again, I think) - but don't worry - it won't be happening again. You're on my 'naughty step' now so I won't see your posts in future. Best regards, Roy

Solid heater water pipes AKA how to reply to threads

Post by roymck »

Instead of wasting my time and yours here a tip on how to post on a thread.

Hi Roy , yes I know what it is you are after, I have one but don't want to sell it but here is a picture of what it looks like.

Why didn't you say that in you first reply instead of rambling on , I don't believe you have one.

I agree, BMC is certently a legend in his own bathroom as well as on this site, is there a possibility that bmc and roymck are the same person? It just seems rude to me, smacks of road rage, if their conversation was in the street or at a meeting there would be a polite exchange of conversation. I visit this site to gain a greater understanding of MM's and engage with people who feel the same about owning and driving them.

Well thanks to all the kind people that PM.d me with the offer of a suitable heater pipe ,somebody sent me one F.O.C so its now sorted . Many thanks.

I just wanted to get hold of a heater pipe, I don't think being lectured about irrelevant issues is reqd.

Just to note we may both be called Roy but we are not the same person.

I am delighted that your problem is sorted, I was just checking that we did not have a Jekyll and Roy situation on this site! Also thinking that it takes all sorts to make a good site like this work and we should respect or politely ignore the contributions made even if they go off track a little, there are some sad individuals (me included) who gain a lot from the non related thread chat.
