Oil leaking from the Coil

Post by YesSirJohn »

Hi there,

I am having trouble starting my 1954 Series 2 Minor. I notice oil leaking from the Lukas Coil which is getting very hot.

Has anyone had this problem and could you recommend a replacement coil.

Many thanks,

Ryan

Well I guess this a case of disproving "its never the coil". Get a new "old" one from a scrap yard.
Should be ready for tea time.

It can be the connections....just NEVER the coil. However - oil leaking is not a good sign...has it been damaged in any way? 'Getting hot' - it WILL do if left with the ignition ON and the points closed - which they are more than likely to be....

Thanks BMC Ecosse! I guess the ignition must have been left on. It is starting again without any issues! :D

Unless its a Lumenition coil with an internal thermal fuse.... The oil in a coil is to help cool it, being a more efficient cooling fluid than water. If all of the oil has leaked out then it will run hotter and could potentially fail although I've never tried it!
Glad to be back!

Is the coil mounted vertical or horizontal? If it's horizontal you may consider repositioning it to vertical, w/the terminals up.
