Any users work for the DVLA?

A very long shot I know but who dares wins Rodders.
I have just bought a 1972(?)Volvo P1800ES thats been buried in a classic car dealers for over 20 years.I know the man well and the car is genuine.However the V5 has disappeared over the years.Not a problem on the face of it.BUT DVLA have no trace of it!I phone them.They say I have to go through the full application as if the vehicle had just been imported from outside the UK(and never registered here before)and are sending out the forms(mind you that was a fortnight ago and they havent arrived yet)!
Now I have discovered that in the early nineties when SORN was being rolled out they had a storage problem on their computers(unlimited storage these days) and to free disk space they decided to archive cars that were on the register but had been untaxed for a while.They wrote to inform owners of this but of course for one reason or another not everyone complied with returning the form.I suppose it was a similar situation as in the seventies when they were changing from paper records to computer,similar things happened.
Several people successfully talked the DVLA into unearthing these archived records to get their old V5 back.Several people also hit a brick wall by being unlucky enough to speak to someone just reading from the hymnsheet who didnt have a clue what they were talking about.
I know for sure that the car was being used on the road in the UK in the nineties.Its a RHD UK car.It seems ridiculous that I may have to spend £85,join an owners' club,fill in two forms,get a verification from the owners club that it is what it is,send back the forms to DVLA and wait several weeks while they process it,then have an inspection.
Here's hoping one of our number works there and has the phone number of someone in the know.

To be honest a very nice man did answer the phone.He said he had been too busy to answer it trying to do stuff for some stalker from the MMOC!
He's explained the task ahead better than anyone else has managed so far.And said I was welcome to phone him again(but to keep trying if it kept ringing as he didn't think the stalker was ready to move on as yet).

He's probably still searching for the id of the "Bionic 4dr" - Cowley DID rebuild him, but didn't re-fit the original parts!

I know we have a laugh and mess about but in all fairness Chris I am in your debt with the DVLA contact you passed on.First rate service and nice people(and I aren't being sarcastic!).I now have email contact with them which is far more convenient.Plus a bonus result from Volvo in Sweden.The contact email that the Volvo Owners' club was a waste of time.I made contact with Volvo UK and expalained my plight.Was given a direct contact in Sweden that has verified my build date etc.Thanks a lot!
