You're so right Willie!!
We'd have a ball with my '57 Traveller. I think the only correct bit on that is both glove boxes have lids, oh and the steering wheel is right.
Possibly if Onne quoted the turns per mile calibration figure from the speedo as well it could help?
the turns per mile calibration figure ? what does this mean? Sorry for me answering so very late, this is the number on the face of the speedo: SN4477/30 1376

Its still not working btw, I am using a *** satnav, just to see how fast I am going, and thus really weird looks from people in other cars. Maybe they don't expect satnav in a 50s car...

On this particular speedo it's 1504, the number of turns the cable completes for each mile registered. In this case the figure relates to a 4.55:1 differential ratio. The black speedos with 4.22:1 diffs has 1408.

If the 1376, that onne quotes, is the TPM calibration and assuming either a 4.55 or 4.22 diff on the Minor then the speedo will be way out. A final drive ratio of less than 4.22 would be necessary for the speedo/miles to be correct.
Onne - have you also checked the miles reading over about a 10 miles distance comparing with a modern car following you along the same route. I realise the problem you could have with km and miles with the reference vehicle indicating km but a convertion to miles of this distance would be near enough for a comparison.
Willie -do you have any info with reference the serial number on the speedo in my pic? It was unused when I obtained it with original test distance. I added the 40 miles on test using electric drill and spare cable!
I'll try the 10mile thing, did I already mention that when it says 30mph on the clock, in reality I am doing 30kph, how can I convert this, I mean one could calculate the diff-ratio likewise?

So this would mean that my 1098 engine etc turns 1,6 times to many, if I am correct.. (which is not at all sure...)

ONNE... cannot make the sums add up to match the fact that
when your speedo reads 30MPH it is actually doing 18.75 MPH
(30 KPH). I repeat, what is your chassis number please?
Thanks for that Willie. I don't have any speedo reference information so your post is very useful. In fact it's uncanny because my chassis no. is 95---- with a 4.55 diff ratio. That speedo in my picture is, as I said, an unused and never fitted to a car spare, just in case! I only relied on the TPM figure when I got it.
FBA11/404700 engine nr 10MA-U-L 355242, haven't yet got the diff number, it's pouring with rain!

ONNE... ok you know that you now have the low compression 1098cc
engine fitted and that your car was made around late 1955. This means that your original diff ratio was 5.375-1. Your speedometer should be
in the middle of the dashboard? Originally it was type AJA5063 which
had a red warning lamp for ignition, orange for oil pressure, and RED
for headlamp main beam. The diff unit should be bolted to the front
of the axle casing by a ring of studs?? As I said earlier, if you have
a speedo which is calibrated for a 4.22-1 ratio but still have the
5.375-1 diff then the speedo will show that you are going faster than
you really are. BUT,from your figures, when your indicated speed
is 30mph you are actually doing 18.75mph(30kph). This is a drastic
difference and, since your speedo SN number is not on the Minor
lists it would appear that you have a speedo from some other car!!
There are specialists who will recalibrate your speedometer if you
can tell them which engine/gearbox/ and diff' ratio you are using.
It is possible to check the diff ratio by putting the rear of the car
on axle stands, marking the prop-shaft and the rear tyres with
chalk, slackening off the rear brakes so that there is NO drag
whatsoever, and then see how many turns of the prop-shaft it takes
to turn the rear wheels one complete revolution.
My speedo is in the middle. Did the Mini have a similar clock maybe? Are there any spare clocks around by the way? Mine is broken too.... I'll check the diff tomorrow. What topspeed should such a low-compression 1098 with the right diff normally have? Mine is appr. 70 top revs then

ONNE..the top speed of a 1098 engine (high compression 8.5-1)
is 80-81MPH. I do not think that the low compression(7.5-1)
engine would be that much slower but it depends, again, on what
ratio diff unit you have fitted.
I can do 70 miles at very tops, then I run out of revs. The number on the diff are:
P4
ATA7033-5 on t'other side it says MOWOG don't know if they are correct, it was dark and rainy when looking. The numbers were found on the top LHS and top RHS
