What colour would these have been?
the silver foot plate thingies... would these have been silver originally or would they have been black like the car? Going to spruce them up - so just wondered what they would have been like originally?[frame]

Re: What colour would these have been?
Some self tappers along the top and 7/16ths nut and bolts along the bottom.
Start soaking the nuts and bolts ASAP with penetrating oil as they rust badly.

Re: What colour would these have been?
No screws or indeed bolts on it to speak of. Looks like it well secured mind you.. probably do more damage trying to prize the things off.
Re: What colour would these have been?
If you look along the bottom you should see where they are fixed. Pay you to look under them because there could be corrosion there, if so better to sort it sooner than later. You don't want to spend time and money smartening things up if you've got more serious stuff going on out of sight!
Re: What colour would these have been?
I can see holes where they may have been previously screwed down with.. No screws there now, and it wouldn't shift one bit... so don't want to damage it by prizing it off which looks like the only way. Looks like it may have been welded down.
Re: What colour would these have been?
You MUST look under (and on your other car..) to see the condition of the sills, and to spray inside with Waxoyl if A ok......

Re: What colour would these have been?
Im not taking apart my traveller - as I am happy with its condition. Reason I bought this car was to learn about mending this as I explained - so I didn't mess up my v good condition traveller
On this - they are not screwed down - so suggestions on removing without totally damaging them? Happy to send photos to show no tapping screws at all. Condition fro underside of car looks ok. Is it likely that under the silver bits it could be awful, but not showing from underside of the car?

Better get some Waxoyl though... any other areas that I should use it on? (Pretty much everything that can rust probably )

Have a look at this thread, should take you to page 10 were it shows the sills on a 4 door. The sill finisher, back narrow strip bolts on along the bottom with about 6 bolts.

Yes the bolts are underneath the black strip, if removed you can also clean and paint the edges that arent seen and check for any rust below them.

Re: What colour would these have been?
Yes. About five nuts and bolts underneath - and it is them that will probably need soaking in penetrating oil/WD4o/deisel. For a few days if they are badly rusted. Then when you have got the black upside-down-U-shaped strip off, (the "sill-finisher") you will be able to see what state the kick-plates (the silver things) are in. The wax-oil needs to be injected into the void underneath those silver kickplates by injecting it under pressure (if you haven't got access to a compressor, now is the time to buy your local garage-man a pint or cross his palm with silver - that wax has got to get on to every inch of the inside of that box-section or the rust will continue to do its worst)! If, when you have got the sill-finishers off, the silver kickplates will then lift straight off, you are laughing. If the inside edge (next to the carpet) has been welded on, the only way to get the wax in will be to drill holes from underneath - if you have any doubts as to where to drill, consult again on here or talk to whoever is going to do the injecting for you.
And bearing in mind the colour of the car, I would "think simple" when making the decision as to what colour the kickplates should be. Me being idle (and tight) would paint them the same colour as the car. Saves time and masking tape etc!

Re: What colour would these have been?
Colour was going to be black or silver - nothing flash!
That makes sense - thanks for explaining to me.
I have never seen so much history with one car - I have a huge file of work done on it. From welding to engine rebuild etc etc.
Its having an MOT (just to see if anything appalling is wrong) even though it doesnt require one, on Friday. Is this the best stuff to buy for the nuts ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400754057022

Re: What colour would these have been?
Hopefully a previous owner hasn't welded them on.....
Glad to be back!
