headlight loom red wire

Post by brett »

Success ! I finally got my main beams and their warning light working :D I stripped all the outer cloth covering off the loom that goes down the bulk head towards the dip switch and the rear light loom and there were 3 wires that had lost their insulation and were touching, with them re-insulated, main beams work fine ! So now everything electrical on the car works :D .
Just 1 last question about wires........ I still have a dark red, thick wire that's live with the ignition on, disconnected. It comes out of the headlight loom on the o/s inner wing. Everything is now connected and everything works so should I just leave it ? Could it be there for an accessory that my car doesn't have, or could it have been for something on the car's original 803cc engine ? As long as it's not doing any harm I'll just leave it, just wondering if anyone knows what it's meant to be connected to ?

So long as you've capped it off/ taped off the end of the wire, you can investigate at leisure.

Is the wire, where it emerges from the loom short or long ? Bare wire or any sort of terminal at the end ?
Do the panel lights work ( you may not have seen it in daylight )...that's a red wire, working with the lights circuit.
I'm more familiar with the later cars so lets see if there are any other suggestions from the good folk on the Forum as to what it might be.

The only red wires that should be on your car are for the side lights and tail lights. They are live when the light switch is on side or headlights and off when when the switch is off. If they do anything else they need investigating
