Initial settings

Post by lockupchap »

My long-term Traveller restoration is almost ready for an MoT, but I'm struggling to get it to tickover smoothly, and not to stall when releasing the throttle. The tickover speed's correct, and the stalling isn't as bad if the mixture is enriched a bit, but I suspect that it's running rich enough already, judging by the plug electrode colours. Raising the carb lifting pin has no effect.

The ignition system is pretty much all new, and in particular the rotor arm is new from Distributor Doctor - I'm aware of the problems people suffer with other suppliers' arms.

The timing could be slightly out, as I set it by ear rather than with a strobe. If I aligned the camshaft pulley marking behind the crossmember against the pointer it barely ran, so I gave up on that idea and used my ears instead. The meter shows a dwell figure of about 62 degrees, which is within acceptable tolerances.

Any suggestions?

Lift the idle speed slightly for now - once it's MOTd and on the road you can sort it out properly. Plug colours at idle don't really count for anything - too influenced by start up with mixture enrichment.
