Fuel Guage and speedo

Hi All

I have had a non-functioning fuel Guage for quite a while now. It is on a 1959 2 door saloon 948cc. I decided I ought to get round to fixing it but am finding difficulty with locating parts. But now the speedo has broken as well. Are these linked at all please and does anyone know where I might find the parts please?

They are linked, but only in os far as one is screwed to the other

Speedo is likely to need a replacement cable - this is a wire running inside a flexible tube, a bit like a brake cable on a push bike, not an electrical cable. Runs from Speed to gearbox.

Gauge is electrical in nature. First test is to take the wire off the sender at the tank and short it to earth. If the gauge goes to full deflection, then the sender is faulty (assuming that it was connected, and the wire hadn't been knocked off). Report back on this test before we get more complicated.

Forgot to say, the speedo cable will be available from most of the traders advertising in Minor Matters.

I have similar problems. my speedo does not work ( and never has for the 3 weeks i have owned the car).

My fuel gauge goes to full when i switch on the ignition, i ordered a new sender from bul-motif which i installed , again no joy. then they informed me the sender they sent would not work on my car (1954 series II) where can i get a sender that will work?

What was wrong with the old sender? Test it with a meter. Speedo probably needs a new cable - although I would remove and inspect it before buying a new one... It's also (unfortunately) possible that the scroll drive has come loose in the gearbox. the speedo itself can be tested using an electric drill - running Anticlockwise.....ie backwards -as if loosening a screw.

Old sender had broken wire inside bu as the wire was very short it looked like it had burned

Oh dear - I'm really not sure you can get the original old sender now.

I have one that shows resistance across the movement indicating it works. Came from a '60 saloon which has the same system as yours I believe.
