REAR AXLE and BUMPER IRONS

The breather on my rear axle is just a threaded hole which i guess isnt how it should be does anyone know what fits in that thread...
Does anyone have a spare of whatever fits?

Im also trying to find out what type of washers are used under the bumper irons the ones I took off which in fact fell apart on removal seem to a hardened plastic... if you know what they are please let me know, again if anyone has two that would be really helpful...

As regards your breather hole it should be fitted with breather Pt No: 21H6060 (ESM Pt No: DIF106) and which is available from ESM @ £2.50 plus the usual.
I suspect that what you have and which has fallen to pieces is Washer Fibre Pt No: ACA5423 and which is the first item to be fitted over the threaded part of bumper mounting studs Pt No: AAA3460/61.

The part numbers feature in the MOSS pdf downloadable parts list, page 82, item No: 39.
Against the part number it does say call for further details.
Type in the part number and it states NO Longer Stocked (NLS).
I have checked with the other major suppliers and they also do not stock the washers so it looks as if you will have to find an alternative
No doubt someone on here will be able to provide an alternative or just dispense with the washer, the bumper will not fall off or come loose without it.

That breather if ordered from ESM - becomes £6.54 when they add it all up! beware!!!!!!! Their postal charges are ridiculous... I seriously doubt the need for 'fibre' washers - can't imagine why they are in there!

The breather from Moss is £4.25 plus P&P plus VAT.
From 'e' bay the cheapest is £4.74 plus £2.34 Postage = £7.08.

So for a new breather you pays your money and takes your chance.

As regards the fibre washers If my memory serves me right they were fitted to help reduce vibration from the bumper assy being transmitted to the body but happy to be corrected.

I recently bought an axle breather from esm and being nylon I found I couldn't get the thread to start, it wanted to cross thread each time I tried. In the end, as only the cap was missing from the original Item, I screwed the original stem back in, and a kind forum member sent me a cap he had spare. I daresay where ever you buy from will be the same material.

YES - the axle does need a breather/vent.
With all that oil churning around pressure would build up inside the axle casing and your oil seals would no doubt leak
So do not block the vent hole.
The design of the breather allows pressure out but does not allow dirt to find its way into the axle.

How do I replace the oil in the axle. i disconnected the prop at the axle end when I removed the engine and oil drained, so i guess there isnt much in it.

To replace or refill the oil in the axle you use the filler plug which is either on the side of the diff carrier or on the rear of the axle casing behind the diff.
The drain plug is in the axle casing under the diff.
When you removed the prop-shaft there should have been NO discharge of oil from the axle. What did you do (if you did) over and above removing the 4 prop-shaft nuts/bolts at the diff end of the prop-shaft?

As above.....can't see how axle oil would drain... You sure you're not thinking of the gearbox which WOULD drain when the prop was pulled out........ I would hang off ordering that vent till you are ready to order a 'parcel' of goods - then the post cost will be lost.

No guys I undid the prop at the axle about 8 nuts at about 3/16ths in size.... maybe the axle isnt empty but it required a washing up bowl to save the block paving!! I knew I should have done it on the lawn...

Its been undone for a few weeks now while I weld and patch the floor also clean the crappy wax oil off re paint and re wax, also need to replace dampers, bushes, U bolts, rubber bump stops etc etc.... lots to do!

The prop shaft is only secured to the diff input flange by qty 4 bolts/nuts and NOT qty 8 nuts.
I do not know where the qty 8 - 3/16" nuts come into it ????
From your description '8 nuts' it seems that you may have undone the diff securing nuts (qty 8 x 5/16" nuts - 1/2" UNF spanner) and loosened the diff in the casing.
If that is the case you will get a bowl full of axle oil.
If you did a new gasket (Pt No: 2A7027) is required.
A photo of what you have now as regards the diff would be helpful.

Thanks Phil, Ill post one asap. you are right I have ordered a new gasket from ebay it only cost about 2£ my plan was to replace it.

Sounds like you may now have a diff hanging on the end of your propshaft!

Note you'll have to remove the half shafts to be able to fully remove the diff (and fit new gasket).
