If you take the propshaft off then all your gearbox oil will leak out, so I wouldn't do that as a test!

Does the noise change with car speed or engine speed? For example, do you get the same noise at 3000rpm is 3rd as you do in 4th?

HAve you checked the diff oil? Drain that through a filter and see what it picks up.

If you freewheel downhill in neutral you should be able to hear any chipped teeth in the diff. If you drive in different gears which make different noises then I would suspect the gearbox

Have you checked the oil in the diff? Quantity? Colour? Metal chips?

Have to say it sounds like layshaft/bearings problem to me.... If it was the final drive or differential - surely would do it in ALL gears.

I'll have it to bits when you get it back to me Cammy - sorry for all the extra work. It looked fine when inspected through the side plate..... :oops: :cry:
