Gearbox advice

Post by mrb »

Hi

Have just experienced a situation of jumping out of first gear ! the situation we were in wasn't good - on a very steep hill with very sharp bends in Yorkshire and the car in front of me stopped - causing me to select first for the remainder of the incline - about every 30 foot it jumped out of first ! since then have selected first with no problems - be it that it s under normal circumstances - would this be because of the torque required or is it my early warning of problems yet to come ?

This week l drained the gearbox oil and couldn't find any incriminating debris - used 20/50 oil anyone recommend any better ?

Thanks in anticipation dave

My box has been doing this for several years now. It's ok for a normal run in 1st - but if the run continues, it will sometimes throw out quite violently. My answer is to , if necessary, hang back - then run in 1st and into 2nd and continue in 2nd. This is not so easy with my 3.7 final drive... but it hasn't forced me to change the box so far....

Did it jump out when you were on throttle or lifting off?
Glad to be back!

Gearbox ok using it under normal conditions - class that mountain road abnormal :D so looking at reply may have a few years left ?

Jumped out whilst in motion ! about 30 foot - but was climbing a very steep hill ! couldn't get into second so was under quite a bit of pressure - from following classic cars !

Yes - exactly the situation I was in. It is possible to 'hold it in' - but of course this is not great for the selector fork - but needs must in extremis. Normally - just use 1st gear to get the car rolling, and then in to 2nd as soon as possible.
