So you can see the miles adding? That's happened to my clock, it still reads 20 mph, and I am sitting behind my desk....

If I am really speeding, I can see some movement in the meter, but still, miles are added to the milometer, so the cable should be fine, it's the same cable, innit, so I think it's some moisture hiding in my clock. If the cable was broken, it should say 0 mph when driving, mine says 20 mph

I've moved this to the 'mechanical' section where it's more appropriate.
If you can see the cable revolving as you drive (do it in 1st gear at 5 mph) then it's clearly the speedo mechanism which is faulty. My advice would be to send the Speedo away to a repair specialist. Have a look in the 'tips' section for previous posts giving details of repairers.

There is just ONE cable running from the box though, isn't there, I'll try and dry it with a hairdryer, because I think moisture is the problem. Does anyone have any exploded views of the clock btw?

I may have misunderstood but I read it as that the mileometer is incrementing, the cable is rotating, but the speedo's not indicating speed? Is that not what you meant?as i said in post the clock is fine the cable is fine the trouble is at the box end HOW DO I FIX THAT ?

I might suggest that british, australian (and japaneese?) drivers of 1000 vehicles should use there left hand.

Anyway - This one sounds more like the clock is working, but the cable is not going round. The gearbox usually needs more than a thump to fix it.
At the gearbox end there is a large round plastic insert that the cable screws into. Remove the cable, then unscrew the insert. Withing the insert is a steel shaft that has a (plastic?) gear on it - Check that the shaft still fits snugly in the insert and also that the plastic gear has no missing teeth and is tight on the shaft. Check the cable end of the cshaft to make sure the square hole is still there and the cable fits it well.
If all that is fine then something fairly odd is happening - put the insert back in the box and re-recheck the cable and speedo.

Hmm - after 3 days we're still confused as to what does & doesn't work properly...
The cable should revolve / turn freely when the car is moving & in gear - please tell us whether or not it's turning.
Please explain what you mean exactly by 'the clock' (because my speedo has a face but no clock). Do you mean the mileometer in the speedo? Because if this continues to record the mileage then the cable must still be revolving and the problem won't be at the gearbox end. So if the cable revolves then my previous post has the answer. If it doesn't revolve then follow Ray's instructions.

I'm not sure what you mean by a twist in the cable.i have got nothing i took the clock out and just had the cable sticking out where the clock goes and drivin up and down the road and not a twist in the cable any where

as i said in post the clock is fine the cable is fine the trouble is at the box end HOW DO I FIX THAT ?
No need to shout!the clock works

From what I can see......... the speedo head works fine when in another car. When driving down the road the cable does not rotate in it's sheath.
I think it might be an internal fault with the speedo drive take-off on the gearbox.
I'm not sure if they can be unbolted and replaced on a Moggy gearbox as I have never tried....... anyone tried?

I've undone the drive take-off thingummy before & pulled it out of the box (why? -just to have a look). It consisted of a hard plastic cog. Now it's possible I suppose that the cog has been damaged? If so I have no idea if replacements are available new or whether obtaining a replacement part from a scrap box will be the only option.

The drive take-off has a revolving square socket at the top where the squared end of the cable is held firmly in place. Assuming that the cable end hasn't been rounded off (which would stop it turning), I believe that you can twist the cog by hand and see whether the square socket is turning. Obviously you need to remove the drive take -off from the gearbox to do so.
