Thanks to everybody who replied to my questions on the engine conversion. i think i will probably go down the route of a 1275cc engine and gearbox conversion mainly due to the spiralling costs. Any info on this project instead would be greatly received.
Thanks again.
Julian

thanks Cam and Ray!
1275 conversion is certainly the easiest conversion but I would recomend using a 1098 Ribbed Minor box rather than the marina/ital box as it is very heavy and you have to lower the engine/move the starter/cut the bellhousing and buy a new prop for a box that is not that nice to use.. oh and add a hydraulic clutch, knock the transmission tunnel about with a big hammer... Run it on the 1098 box while you save for the sierra conversion
As for tuning I would definatly recommend starting with a large bore exhaust and lcb, use a mg metro maifold and carb. You can get a head job or overbore later when funds allow.
Make sure you get the distributor with the engine
as it took me 6months to find the correct one
But make sure you fit disks and sort the suspension first, as Emily my car will pull well past 95 with out too much trouble and you are going to end up getting hurt if you cannot stop or handle safely at those speeds.
I have a ital 1275 engine with 1098 minor box. Minor axle wit 3.7:1 diff on 165/60/14" goodyear tyres (on mini-lites) with spax dampers and an antiroll bar to great effect. But even with that she can get very unsettled on the wrong side of 80 if the road surface or a big gust of wind get under the front..
