Wiring a new harness..er.. loom

Post by bloodyank »

My wiring on my 65 Traveller is..how do you Limeys say...bodged. Virtually every connection has been redone, some with just a twist and tape. Now my headlights and horn are out. I'm considering doing a whole new loom, but am intimidated my such a daunting task. On the other hand, seems like I have read here that it's really not that hard. I know it's the right thing to do.
Talk me into it!
Thanks, as always...

Just buying a loom and fitting it is easy peasy! Making your own loom is slightly more challenging - but not difficult either. Decide what 'extras' or modifications your car has (alternator?) from standard before ordering a loom. If doubtful - take pictures of all the old connections before you disconnect anything.

Try these guys - they will provide a standard loom or modify the standard loom to your personal spec, adding in alternator circuits, hazard flashers, driving lights, accessory sockets, electric fan, radio/cd - pretty much anything really and they ship anywhere in the world. http://www.autosparks.co.uk/product_inf ... ts_id=4752 . Worth a call/email to get a quote on what you specifically want.

Other Minor suppliers will also be able to sell you a standard loom for your car too. Although you CAN make your own the amount of wire you'd need to buy, bullets, connectors etc. plus the time it took you to work it all out it probably isn't worth it. Good luck :-)

Its all in the planning...

Once you have ordered your new loom to suit your car and actually have it in your possession.. check through to see that the cable colours and connections look much the same and familiarise yourself with the routing. Then remove sections of the old loom and fit the new loom in its place starting at the engine bulkhead grommet. It helps if as you remove the old ...snip the wire before each connector and it then leaves a colour coded wire to check when you make the connection and swap the connection for the new loom connectors. Clean up contacts as you go..and be especially careful to ensure good earth connections.

Don't forget to specify LHD? model year etc and any extras that you have or would like to have. Looms come in fabric covered, black in a few years or plastic covered, just wipe the oil off and you can still see what colour (English spelling!) it is in a few years time
When you get the loom lie it out on the floor and identify all the terminals and connections. Do not throw the old loom away, you never know when you are going to need a length of red/green.

Much as Taupe says above. If you're logical and organized then its relatively straight forward. Buy a ready made loom and spend the time you save enjoying the scenery in Colorado. I build looms for Formula 1 cars so know how much time they can take. Also you won't be able to make an authentic braided loom like one of the professional suppliers.

Once you've bought one, lay it out in your house(clean, warm etc) and work out what legs go where then mark each wire up with a piece of tape and write on where it goes. The more familiar you are with it out of the car then the easier you will find fitting it to the car and connecting it up.

If you are ordering one from the UK you are probably worth ordering new female bullet connectors too. When you come to connect things up, cover each bullet connector lightly in silicon/electrical grease. This will stop things corroding over the years. Once its all wired in, don't connect the battery straight away, test each part of the loom with a multimeter to check for short circuits and errors.

Easy!
Glad to be back!
