Electirical Ignition

Hello,

I own a Morris Minor 1965 Salloon. I have recently bought an alternator but I want to now chance my distributor to an electircal ignition.

Any advice on which one, where to get it from and if it should be positive or negative?

Any help would be much appreciated!

well with an alternator you will have to change to negative earth
accuspark or simonbcc are good for electronic dizzys
available from ebay

Is it just the leads I need or do I have to buy the whole thing?

Also, can you advise me on some decent spark plug leads and where I could get those too?

Also, I have a 1965 Morris Minor with the square lights on the back but I'd prefer the look of the round indicator and brake lights, would this be easy to change? I've seen some one ebay however they're for an austin/mini so not sure if they will be compatible.

With enough skill and effort - anything will 'fit'. What it will look like is another matter entirely.......

When people talk about accuspark or simonbcc etc as 'electronic' ignition, they aren't really electronic. They are 'contactless' in that they use a magnet and a reed switch to replace the points. They improve timing accuracy as there is no wear and less contact 'bounce' as with normal points. As a reed switch is a conventional set of contacts housed in a vacuum inside a glass tube the contacts last much longer as there is no oxidation.

If you want real electronic ignition then you're looking at Lumenition etc which will also give a fatter spark.

Why then would they be polarity sensitive if they only contained passive components like reed switches?

I would think they would use Hall effect devices to sense the magnet position and other electronics for the low impedance switching.

Perhaps Powerspark/SimonBBC don't amplify the coil voltage like the capacitive discharge units do. I don't know.
