Series 2 petrol sender question

Post by brett »

Hi everyone, i'm a new member and a first time minor owner so i'll take this opportunity to say Hello !

I've got a 1955 series 2 split screen 4 door saloon fitted with a 1098 cc engine and i'm loving it :D

I've just removed the petrol tank sender unit because the sealing gasket has stopped sealing ! I'm going to fit a new sender and seal as soon as they come but without thinking i didn't make a note of which way round the sender went, ie, from standing at the back of the car which way should the float arm go off to inside the tank and which way the connector for the wire points ? I think the wire may of pointed towards the front of the car but i'm sure i read somewhere the float should be in the humped part of the tank.

Be very grateful if someone knows for sure as i don't really want to have to remove it over and over again !

Many Thanks in advance and i'll be starting a restroration thread very soon :D

Brett.

just to add after reading other posts, my car is positive earth, has a bronze faced speedo/fuel gauge and the wire connects to the sender with a tiny nut rather than a Lucar connector.

On ESM's site it states that the sender float has to be set before final fitting, what on earth does that mean ????

Hi and welcome to the site.
You will be lucky to get a new sender for a Series II and incidently its totally different for the black faced speedo. There was no adjustment on mine and I don't think it matters which way it's fitted. Mine was fitted with the float to the right looking from the back. See if you can obtain one on this site under the "Wanted" section or try "sparesman" which is the club spares section.
Before you fit try it first outside the tank.
PLEASE REMEMBER PETROL TANKS ARE DANGEROUS EVEN IF THEY ARE EMPTY BECAUSE OF THE FUMES.
Should be ready for tea time.

We noticed when fitting the sender back on Steveys 54 saloon that the original split screen float has a shorter arm than the one fitted to the minor 1000. I suppose this is because the tank is a smaller capacity on the older car.

Too many Minors so little time.....
