Temp Gauge - Average?

My car came with a (poorly) retroffited temperature gauge.

It normally reads around 80C. What's 'normal' and do I really need to know, as long as I know what's normally and what's relatively a problem....

(And does it measure water temperature?)

Usually they measure water temp - although some do measure the oil temp..... :roll: 80C is ok - it all depends what thermostat has been fitted!
