Crankshaft pulley ...

Is it possible that this this crankshaft pulley was not made by Morris ?

It looks like the pulley has fractured at some time and some (rough!) welding has been done. Not easy to tell if it's original until you remove the dirt, although unlikely to be other I would have thought.

You've answered the question I SHOULD have asked .. which was is the WELDING origional ...

How exterordinarily odd ... I just bought the part new from ESM for about £30 ... why would anyone go to the trouble of welding up a broken one (I would point out that the back of this fractured breaking the fanbelt).

Another question, Is it possible that the car runs smoother and with less vibration now the new crank pulley has been fitted? My wife swears it does and I have to admit that it seems alot less lumpy at idle .. is this possible from an unbalanced crank pulley ?

Yes, if the welded pulley was not quite straight or a bit heavier one side than the other then it will have indiced some vibrations when spinning. The new straight one would have eliminated this problem.

Hello Justin,
in answer to your question "why would anyone go to the trouble of welding up a broken one", I did so I could keep the car on the road.
I hasten to add that I replaced it as soon as possible with the solid one from a MG specialist. The original pressed steel (riveted, from memory?) is a horrible design.

The pulley breaks like that if the fan belt is too tight.

Probably this had happened at some time ... I'm so scared of getting the fan belt tension wrong that I always get my next door neighbour (an MOT tester) to check it for me .. I think the end of this one was just becasue of the repair .. Also it happened on a very cold morning so I think that made a contribution ..
