Pickup rear spring, front mounting issue.

Post by Henners »

Evening all
I have recently acquired a pick up and discovered that a rear leaf spring front mounting pin is waggling about in its transverse tube chassis mounting. Is there a recommended cure for this or just weld it up in situ ?

Anybody got any tales to tell of how they fixed theirs ?

Have the rubber bushes disintegrated? Some pics would help us know what's gone wrong.

The pin started out as a separate part, and was welded in place after being inserted into the cross tube.

I suspect the pin has broken away from the retaining cups, if so any welding in front will reduce the working length of the pin and prevent the bushes fitting properly. You need to bear that in mind in finding a solution.

Thanks to you both but Les wins ! as he has identified the exact problem I have. Will have to give it some thought about the way I will tackle it and report back with progress.

Just another thought....were the cups welded or as with mine a thru bolt retains them in. I think this is a previous bodge?

They were welded, a couple of holes were drilled at 180 degrees then filled with weld, penetrating through to the retaining cups. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

Take a measurement from the side of the chassis, or some point, to the end of the pin, before you remove. Then retain this measurement when replacing.

VERY important as this sets the distance for the rear axle.

Mate does jig work, whereabouts are you?
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!
