Hi all.
I've just discovered that my mm has killed it's head gasket, so started stripping the head down and found it still has the old 'o' ring type valve stem oil seals.
I was told that the car had an unleaded head fitted years ago, but I thought these heads came with the later top hat style seals.
Any idea how I can tell what head I actually have?
Also can I fit the later seals to a leaded head (if thats what i have) it has smooth valve guides?
Oh and I'm short on time so don't have time to order from the usual suspects so does anybody know what other cars these newer seals fitted so I can ask my local parts guy.
Thanks.
Paul.

valve stem oil seals?

Re: valve stem oil seals?
Mini is the obvious fitment, but if plain guides they may not stay in place for long. I suppose if you could get the guide clean and oil free - you could apply a few spots of Superglue and slide the top-hat down over and hope it sticks. Only fit them on the inlet guides.

I did wonder about some sort of adhesive, you mentioned only fitting to the inlet valves so fit the 'o' ring on the exhaust valves?bmcecosse wrote:Mini is the obvious fitment, but if plain guides they may not stay in place for long. Re: valve stem oil seals?
If you wish - or none at all. The top hat seal would prevent any worthwhile amount of oil getting down the guide/stem of the HOT exhaust valve - leading to wear and possible seizing up.

That's great, thanks for the info.
Another job for my growing to do list.
Cheers.
