exhaust smoke

Post by mistarkos »

My lowlight just got back from mechanic last night. The whole exhaust system has been replaced too. It was smoking before and it still smokes. Can I use STP's Smoke Treatment or STOP No Smoke/No Leak on that car? Is there anything else I can try to stop the smoke?

Thanx.

What colour is the smoke?

I checked the oil level and it's fine.
I saw it smoking last night when a friend of mine was driving it and I was following him with another car. From what I remember the smoke was white - I could see it through my cars lights beam. For sure it's not a black smoke.

How long was the journey?
Not uncommon for condensation to build in the exhaust (old or new) and come out as 'steam' in the first 10 mins or so of running.

Hello mistarkos, new exhaust systems do smoke a little when new but was it a cold night? white smoke usually means water leak :(

The journey was about 5-10 minutes. I was just picking it up from the garage where they replaced the exhaust system. It was not a cold night - cold nights are over in Cyprus some time now :)

Water leak? From inside the engine? How can I check this?

If the engine is burning oil you will get a puff of smoke if you run downhill with your foot off the accelerator and then put your foot down when you reach the bottom. If you stand behind the exhaust pipe you will smell the oil

Blue smoke at anytime, indicates oil burning..worn engine. Black smoke indicates too rich a mixture, adustment on carb. white smoke indicates condensation ie water vapour....either just that, as a result of water condensing in exhaust as a result of the combustion or water leak from water system into engine...if you are sure it was white keep an eye on the water level in the rad,if it stays the same forget about it,its condensation, if the level drops then it needs further investigation,ie head gasket .Good luck

As Smithskids said could be paint burning off exhaust or assembly paste, look in engine bay and underneath for signs of smoke before doing anything else
