carbon brushes

the bushes on my sewing machine are wearing low, the company that made the motor appears to be long since gone.. can any one recommend a supplier of small carbon brushes / has any experience of sanding down bigger brushes to fit, as seems to being suggested on some ebay pages..

Sanding down should work well enough. Have you searched ebay for the size of brush you need?

What is the model of machine/motor? There seems to be a few places on the internet selling brushes. Can you measure the size of the old brushes as something generic may fit. Sanding/filing will work, I used to do this to pencil leads for my minic slot cars. Oh dear, I feel a trip to the loft coming on.

If you sand/file brushes down to fit, be sure that the carbon composition is quite similar to the originals. Depending on application some brushes are harder than others. A prime example is the brushes in a starter motor compared to a dynamo. (A generator in my lingo).

the brushes are 5/32" x 5/32" x ? with a 1" spring.. although i do believe i have found the correct size now just trying to find them at the correct price..

Thanks for all your help but my sewing machine motor died tonight! or at least i thought it did until i decided to finish what i was doing by hand cranking the wheel only to find it was very stiff! a quick service of the sewing machine and all is working fine again , thank goodness. I still need to get some new brushes but the need for them is not so desperate.
