History of VWJ590

Post by Onne »

Does anyone know anything about my beloved Moggy? She's now registered in The Netherlands, since '99. She's a lovely black 2dr saloon and has chassisnr 404700, and she's a series II, although appearing to be a 1000

Does she have a split windscreen (2 section)? Of yes then she's a series 2 if no then she's a 1000.

I have not got my reference book to hand but someone on here should be able to tell you what she is from the chassis number. Also what are the prefix letters to the number?

She has a split screen indeed, and the old taillights and she's got trafficators. Do you know if there was a lot of difference between the Series II and 1000 bonnet? Cause it says 1000 on the side. She has also got an other engine (10MA etc.) She's black with creme grille and wheels. The chassis number isn't on it's original place, so all it says is 404700, and she was first registered 10-02-1956 so she should be a series II

Yes, the split-screen bonnets have a 'V' to accept the windscreen shape. The Minor 1000 ones are curved next to the windscreen. Otherwise they are the same. Sounds like someone has put Minor 1000 badges on. It SHOULD say 'MORRIS MINOR'

There were many different styles of tail light.

When you say 'old' tail lights do you mean this type:

Yours should be the same except with a painted base where the chrome is.

Your car is a series II.

Those are indeed Elisabeths taillights
Unfortunately, I can't check out her bonnet, as she is currently undergoing anti-corrosion treatment (her birthday present) Sheé having her 49th birthday on Feb 10th

Well, those lights are early Minor 1000 ones. Late series 2 ones should have a half painted / half chrome base. I don't have my reference book to hand so I can't tell you the exact date when they changed over. Maybe someone on here can. If not then I can tell you at the weekend when I get back home.

Mine haven't got any chrome at their base

Can't track down that change in any of my books, sorry. All I can find is the fact that in '51 there was a nickel shortage, so the grille and hub caps were painted, not chromed, which might be related!

Chassis numbers 4***** seem to be '55/'56-ish, so very late series II seems a reasonable bet for now - I'll try and find more.

Right, this site http://www.auto-part.com/auto/shop/vin.asp - has the chassis number as one of the last series II's. The ran to 448714.

Oh yours is definately series II (ALL 1000s don't have the split-screen). But I was trying to determine if you had the correct rear light units.........

Simple! The Minor 1000 ones won't fit a split-screen car!

Never ever?... cool, then it's a lot easier just replacing those badges saying minor 1000 by Morris Minor eh

Yep! You will notice that your bonnet has a V shape to fit near the windscreen. The Minor 1000 ones don't. They have a gentle curve instead, so they are not interchangeable.

The badges saying Morris Minor are still available and are about £3 or so each I think.

Yes, but they are £5 from ESM. Maybe that's OK, but I got mine from a rally at maybe a reduced price.
