Engine noise getting worse.

Post by bluegrass »

I am having some difficulty working out what is wrong with my 1098 engine. Under load and above certain revs, its like a gritty vibration type noise comes in. Its hard to describe exactly, so I have posted a link here for a youtube clip.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCN6_0A ... e=youtu.be

If you listen all the way through, you can hear it especially when i put down and take off revs in quick succession. The oil pressure readings are all very good. No oil pressure lights are on, and apart from the added noise it seems to run well. All the oil levels in gearbox/engine/diff are fine.

It also seems to be getting worse over time, and its not great for my tinnitus even with ear plugs in.

Any ideas/help much appreciated.

Okay for me too.

You sure there isn't any metal to metal contact anywhere, like
the engine or g/box vibrating against the body?

Just a thought, try the obvious first.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

You Tube is working now.
I have listened to it and offer the following but offer no guarantees that I am right.

1. Sounds like there may be a loose baffle.
2. There appears to be a bit of a whine from the transmission on overrun and drive take up.

Unless you are real and up close to the car it is very difficult to determine what it is, I hope that you are successful in finding the answer.

Have you checked the exhaust system?

Thanks for the posts. I have been worried that its engine bearings, but I'll check out the exhaust system, gearbox, engine mountings etc to make sure its nothing along those lines.

If it was engine bearings it would be a deep rumble or a bad knocking. I could not hear either of those noises.

The exhaust baffle is inside the silencer so inspecting it won't reveal anything.

It is hard to make out the noise from that recording as the sound is somewhat muffled. Another one to check, is the exhaust blowing at the manifold?? May need to re-seal this.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Worked for me this morning - the e=ngine steady bracket is upside down and may be too tight, and as others have suggested - the exhaust may be touching the 'port hole' where it leaves the engine bay. I don't think it is anything too serious,,,, The car would appear to be an MOT fail though - rust within 300mm of suspension mounting...

To check as to whether you have a loose baffle bang the side of the exhaust silencer with the side of your closed fist. If you hear a rattle it is the baffle that is loose.
Loose baffles are a known problem on the Minor and the wksp manual has a section (attached) on repairs.
Your silencer may not be exactly the same but any repairs will be similar.[frame]Image[/frame]

Another thought. I had a similar sounding problem on my Traveller about ten years ago, a mystery vibration at about 50 MPH in top, car seemed =to go ok otherwise.

A compression test showed one of the cylinders was down and adding oil to the cylinder made no difference, it was a very slightly burnt exhaust valve.

Thanks. I just fitted an oil pressure and temp gauge. At first I though all was well, 60psi at 60mph, and 70 degrees C, but after a longer run today, the psi dropped to 45 psi or so at 60mph which seems a little low? Any thoughts? Cheers

Is it only "grinding" whilst in motion?
