Well I was going to go for the Toyo 350's which are the successor to the 330. Apparently a stiffer sidewall, so in theory good for a 165 tyre on a 4.5" rim because it will not be so spongy when cornering. However an MG Midget owner's review said that they give an incredibly harsh ride and really unsuitable for a small sporty car. Also the Toyo 350 165/70 R14 only come in XL which if anything would give an even harsher ride.
Anyway I've finally gone for Barum Brillantis 2 (good price - £183 fitted

) which are made by Continental and did well in official test:

although again I have read reviews which range from 'great' to 'can't wait to get them off the car'. We shall see - I may regret not getting the Nankangs
