Ignition

Post by howard jones »

Have just fitted a full Accuspark conversion system and must admit it's a great improvement. However, in higher revs' going through 2nd / 3rd. gear I am getting the odd missed beat. Is it likely that the dizzy' needs advancing ?

Could be caused by so many things. Presumably you checked the timing after fitting the accuspark, as it will be different to the previous setting with points. I wouldn't just 'advance it'. Make sure it's in the right ballpark first, then you can fine-tune it.

Was this a full Accuspark dizzy? Or just an electronic conversion kit in your old dizzy - to eliminate the points..... If so - could be rotor arm/cap/HT leads/spark plugs. If the old dizzy - is the vacuum advance working? You should gently advance the timing till you hear some pinking......and then take it back slightly so it's 'not quite' pinking.

I fitted the complete dizzy because there is no point ( ) putting a conversion kit in a worn old dizzy if you ask me

Thanks bmcecosse - It is a full Accuspark conversion kit ( dizzy / leads / coil etc. ) I have set it now at TDC and it has improved it more - but I still think I should do what you have done - slightly advance it til' it pinks and then drop it back a touch. Will try that next. Cheers.

You do need to do that - every engine is slightly different - as is the fuel you use - so there can be no 'fixed' setting that will be right for all.
