Frost Plugs

Post by Kiwi MM »

I am rebuilding a 1275 Marina engine to go into my 1969 MM ute. (replacing the original 1098 engine)

In the olden days we would insert the frost plugs with shellac.
What now ??
No shellac available in NZ.

You could use gasket goo (preferred) or silicon.

Generally they are fitted DRY - but yes - a smear of gasket goo should be ok - but wipe off all the excess immediately !! I would not use silicone.

So long as you have cleaned up the machined ice/core plug holes in the Marina block you will not require to use any sealant/goo or any other gasket material.
The Marina ice/core plugs (Pt No: AEC876) are different to the Minor in that they are cup shaped and not convex (which require flattening to seal). They only need to be driven in so that the top of the cup sides are flush with the outside of the block. No back stop as in the Minor ice/core plug hole. I have a Marina block in my Minor and the ice/core plugs are driven in dry and have never leaked.
