Hi.i am interested in a traveller.this is to be used and not a show car.i am getting a bit old to start crawling around rebuilding a car.so the question is whats a reasonable price to pay for a usable car.michael

I think you will need to pay £3000 to £5000..
just make sure the wood is ok and have a good look under the car...

Thanks for reply.my reason for asking is that prices are all over the place. I build live steam locomotives for a hobby and have become fed up towing a trailer all the time to carry the locos.so a traveller came to mind, low running cost and interesting. Michael

I "think" these are the steam engines you can have rides on. Some of these are quite large, not certain about the weight as the Traveller's rear load compartment is really only a wooden shelf above the petrol tank. Having said that I have seen a model in a Traveller (rear seat down) They had a ramp up to the car with rails and pushed it in and locked it down to secure it for transporting it around :D

If your Locos are 7 1/4" gauge - you won't get anything but a v small Tank Engine in the back of a Trav ! As with any classic - RUST is the big enemy - followed by the timber of course on a Trav. It also really needs to be kept under cover...not left standing out in all weathers. £3k should get you a very reasonable one - but look at a good few before deciding! And let's see some pictures of the Locos..... :D

Hi chaps, my live steam loco is 5 inch gauge.yesterday went to c wares place in bristol.what a load of over priced rubbish.it put me right off the cars.michael

You shouldn't be put off by a visit to one dealer. There are plenty of good cars available privately; but if you want to security of a dealer guarantee then look at several different traders and compare what you get. You obviously liked the look of the Traveller, but have you also considered a van? There are plenty of us who use all variants of the Minor as our every day cars, so do look at some other examples, and don't go by your first visit.

For those members wanting to see what a live steam ( passenger hauling ) miniature loco looks like - here's one of mine. It's a 5'' gauge 2-4-2 Tank engine ( Aspinall ) and weighs in at around the 90lb mark and a 2 handed lift. I used to take her down to our club strapped down on a specially made base board in my Audi Avant. This could handle the extra weight with ease due to the power etc. of a 2ltr. diesel but I wouldn't consider putting this extra strain on my little Annie.[frame]Image[/frame]

I wonder how long that comment about a 'dearly loved' trader will survive ! As others suggest - don't be put off by one trader (especially that one..) there are plenty of more realistically priced Minors around - just keep looking. Unfortunately the 'For Sale' section on this forum is a bit bare at the moment - but new entries come round all the time. Lovely Loco there Howard! Obviously as long as I can swing a shovel, I prefer the full size Locos....but I do get invited to a friend's 7 1/4" gauge layout round his garden - where we get to 'play' with his George Stephenson Black 5 - and yes it does have the Stephenson link motion. He's just finishing off an A4 (will be Union of South Africa) - a massive beast![frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

That must be one hell of a patch of land your mate has, size of at ''least'' a football pitch I imagine to incorporate a 71/4'' line. And the weight of a 71/4'' Black Five too ! - probably weighing in not too shy of 2.5cwt ( in old money ). Impressive build quality your pal has - what a loco !

Oh yes - he has a decent gareden and not all same level, so there is a raised section - and still a gradient to contend with. He has the usual 'sit on' trucks for passengers - and a goods train - and a set of 3 carriages too. Not me in the pictures - but the carriages are lovely![frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]
