1964 speedo

Post by nikki1979uk »

don't know if anyone can help me,

this is my speedo. it seems a really strange thing, but the first number is the one that changes with the fractions of miles. so when i look back at the MOT's i can see that the mileage has gone up and down massively.

so its showing 76161 and its the 7 that moves. is this normal or is something really wrong? am i likely to get into any trouble with future MOT's if i leave it. the speed and fuel seem to be working fine. i have no idea how many miles my little engine has done!![frame]Image[/frame]

It's obviously not correct - and I can't imagine how that is happening! Don't worry about the MOT - you do need a 'working' speedo, but there is no requirement to have an odometer.

Maybe someone tried to fiddle the clock to reduce the mileage and they somehow managed to damage something or not put it back properly so that it constantly runs backwards.

Is this for a 1964 Minor? The '80 mph' speedo in the picture is for a 948 Minor from 1956 to ~1962 (pre-1098 engine). It would not make any difference to what is happening, but maybe the wrong 'turns per mile'. There are some numbers above the odometer, what is the last one of these?

Agree with Richard - a '64 should, I think, have the bronze faced 90mph speedo.Would suggest you have a look around for one and simply swap them over. You would, of course, need to check that it is correct for your car. The key will be to look at the small numbers just above the odometer which should be SN4477/80 for 2 drs (chassis no. 990290 - 1082279), 4 dr (chassis no. 990290 - 1082283), convertible (chassis no. 990290 - 1082716), and Traveller (chassis no. 990290 - 1082536).

If your car is later than that, it shoud have the black faced speedo with the serial no. SN4419/04

Hope that helps? Good Luck :-)

yeah its a 1964 2 door. the serial numbers on the clock are 4408/00 there is also 1525 at the end, don't know i that's important or not. :D no wonder i couldn't find a new speedo when i searched for the 1964 ones

The '1525' refers to the 'TPM' and is for a 948 engined car.

Assuming you have a 1098 engine/gearbox and the correct 4.22 ratio rear axle, you will need a '90 mph' speedo with a TPM of ~1400 - someone will have the correct figure?

1525 is not right - should be 1508 tpm for a 948. Is that speedo for a Minor ??? I wouldn't worry about the serial numbers - the 'tpm' is the one that matters.

The guy i brought it off said it had a clock change, but as I don't know minors very well, :) bit of a newbie to them the Speedo looked like the others I had seen so I figured it was right.

I notice some have more lights too so not really sure what mine should look like, the v5 says 1st reg was 02/01/1964. So I figure it was built in 63. Would just be nice to get the correct one fitted :)

Roy,

Before I said that a 1525 tpm was for a 948 Minor, I looked at the original speedo for our 1958 948 - please see the picture below:
[frame]Image[/frame]
There may be other 'tpm's', but 1525 is definitely correct for at least some 948's.

The 1098 tpm is 1376 and was the same for both the gold and black faced units.

nikki1979uk,

I have found a working gold faced 1098 speedo if you would like it?

What mileage would you like it set to?

If you email me your address to richardl.wale at btinternet dot com, I will pack it up and post it to you.

They must have made a 'correction' then - because 1408 is the 'normal' for a 1098. Thinking about it again - I believe the normal 948 is 1504..not 1508 . ....but of course neither is significantly different to 1525.
