What is it ? Answers on a postcard

Post by cheshiremorris »

Sorry to fill the forum up with trivial things but I appear to have a football shaped thing in the boot which I have no idea what it is. One side looks like the output part of a horn but its 5 times bigger than any horn Ive ever seen, guess it could be a powerful classic horn to beep at the porsche drivers as you zoom past them :D[frame]Image[/frame]

it is an early horn. would not be wanting to sit in the car with that going of behind me.. might be an early attempt at a car alarm.

Looks like a Lucas windtone horn.
They were manufactured in two types - high note and low note and were frequently mounted at the front of the car in the open for best sound. :D

Lucas Windtone horn. If you look just inside the mouth it should be stamped H or L, for best results they should be fitted in pairs[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

I bought one of these at an autojumble last year - but all I can get from it is a miserable 'croak' - anyone know how to make it sound properly? :D

the bracket on a horn is usually laminated, ie several thin layers of bracket .in my experience if this bracket is omitted the horn will sound dull and a bit on the quiet side, also a clean and adjustment can improve them

YES! It does have a laminated bracket - and it's broken.....and I did wonder how that would affect the sound. I guess the whole horn has to 'resonate' to make a 'good' noise. I'll have a think about how to fix that - but I suspect it will be spring steel.........

Not 100% sure but I think there is an adjusting screw,on them ,to get them to work at diferent intensities,so may be a bit of a fiddle will produce a sound, rather than a croak, think its a bit like adjusting the overthrow on a pump.In fact in the photo is that it on the dome :-?

Remove the dome and there is an adjusting screw inside. For further reading see Taffthehorns.com website
