Cheesegrater traveller question

I am sure many of you have seen the £17,995 traveller on ebay:

Well it got me wondering being as it states

It's very far from being 'original'.....and no heater!! Strange location for the servo - must be a nightmare to bleed the brakes...... It is a nice looking car - but not being 'original' does it really justify the asking price?? Each to their own....

I think the claim of "One of only twenty surviving" refers to the Split Screen Travellers of both Series II and Face-lift Series II and the number of such S/S Travellers that are registered with the MMOC, and not those surviving world-wide.
That is what I was told when I registered my September '56 Traveller - first registered just days before the Series III was released (one piece windscreen). The reg no. on my one was a replacement after "plate stealing" in 1985.

Were they ever fitted with overriders when new - or are the ones shown all later additions?

Roy, in the case of my one (as seen in the sig), it was a "standard car" with no over-riders, no heater and, I believe, only one sun visor. It was also not fitted with any rear seat "cards" or elbow rests. When I bought it, the car was sporting plastic chromed over-riders. These I replaced with never used ones from a stock of spares I bought, in the late '70s, when I had my first Moggy saloon.

Overriders were fitted to the 4 door Series MMs on introduction , never fitted to 2 door/convertible MMs, not sure which Series IIs had them.

Well that seems to make sense being as after a quick search I have found 10 late split screen travellers and so that added to the british cheesegraters I have found 12 (one is canadian) would mean that there is 22 that I have found.

Beginning to think it may actauely be just cheesegraters with 20 left, I have asked the seller to see if they will tell me in refernce to what the 20 is being as I have found some more Series 2 Travellers:

There is a register up and running for series 11 travellers, run by Mark Howard who at one time was thought to have the oldest known traveller until 182 UXH turned up at the Harewood House Rally a few years ago.

My traveller VPX 935 is believed to be the newest one on the register before the 1000 was produced and like Georges has a few 1000 features such as later seats.

My Traveller's body plate is too corroded to read the Body Number. I'm going to take the plunge and pay for a Heritage Certificate which, hopefully, will come back with the Body Number. Mine was first registered on September 21st 1956, with the index number 90 BPH, and the Series III Traveller, with 948cc engine, was launched on September 25th. Wonder who has the last of the Split Screen Travellers?

Hello POMMReg, on my '51 Series MM saloon, the NMP plate numbers have no relation to the Bulkhead "strip" number - NMP plate has Z12102/3 - 50054, and the Bulkhead strip plate has BM48964 - is there something wrong?
My Traveller's Bulkhead strip bears the number Z20098, but the NMP plate's number areas are rusted through.

Mmm - this post got me thinking too. As a former early grille S2 Traveller owner - it's one of those in the photo gallery above, I recall, back in '86 when I got the car that there were many more on the original S2 Traveller register than the 20 or so quoted. From memory, there were around 40 early grilles and about 50 later grilles. This was also the case in 1994 when Minor Matters ran an article by Bryan Gostling, a noted early S2 Traveller owner and club spares guru. The chassis number of all the known early grilles and their owners was included in a side bar to the article. I would guess in the intervening period that some will have made the last trip to the great scrap yard in the sky but would also imagine that there are many more that simply don't feature in the latest edition of the register.

I asked Mark for a copy of the current register and this showed (as of November 2012) 19 early grille and 34 later grille so my question is what's happened to all the rest???

George my traveller details are,

Its build date was 19-21st September and despatched 24th September 1956, chassis no FLJ 11 / 448647 and only another 27 series 11 travellers were made after this and another 60 odd series 11s in total.

Looking at gtt1951s NMP plate numbers my numbers are Z12101 T 19936 and bulkhead number is BMT19969. First registered 7-5-1951. Curioser and curioser there seems to be no sequence . :( :( smithskids
