Opinions on minimum distance between tank and exhaust.

Hi, I have an aftermarket exhaust and a badly planned large fuel tank. I managed to squeeze the tank in but there is a very low clearance (few mm) between the muffler and the tank.

Surprisingly I couldn't find much on Google. What do people think too close is?

I would want the exhaust so that it could never rub a hole in the tank even if an exhaust mount failed.

It would have to have two mounts to fail, and I believe it would drop down and increase the distance, rather than rub against the tank.

I would want a good couple of inches - at least. Re-route the exhaust!

I could replace the back-box with a straight through, that would give it a few inches of space I reckon.

Might increase the noise a lot though :|

The frustrating thing is this was custom, and not particularly cheap. It will be cheaper replacing a pipe & backbox than buying a different petrol tank though...

I'm thinking a mild steel cherry bomb might fit further back, that'll only be £40 and I'd get the nicer mild steel sound and I can just replace the backbox when it rusts through/burns all the glass.
