Exhaust, changing muffler

Hello, I would like to change the center muffler for something with better flow and condition. Could be a little louder too. Do you know any suitable ones? I don't want to change the whole exhaust. Is it better to move the box to the rear? Is it allright to put a single cherry bomb up the front with those 32mm to 50mm adaptors and still make it MOTable?

Back in the day - the standard move was to fit a Sprite Mk 1 'straight through' silencer. It was inexpensive and pretty much a straight replacement as far as I remember. Didn't make the car any faster ... Probably not easy to find now. You can try a 'cherry bomb' and see what happens. The MOT is entirely at the discretion of the tester if he considers the noise 'excessive'.... There's not much room for a silencer at the rear although some twin box systems do squeeze one in.

The inexpensive Mk1 sprite exhaust silencer is available from Moss Europe Pt No: GEX3252 @ £31.96 plus VAT +p&p.
In the early days of Minor ownership and similar to bmc I had the Mk 1 Sprite silencer fitted to my Minor. I used a cut down Sprite front pipe which The ran under the rear axle and I never had any problems with ground clearance. Sounded good too.
The 1098cc/1275cc silencer Pt No: GEX3365 @ £27.50 plus VAT + p&p is also inexpensive and more suitable for the larger size engine.

Well researched Phil! I don't find either of these 'inexpensive'... I have a Cooper S straight through which I bought (new) on ebay for £3 - and it was near me - so collected it! My Sprite I silencer was about £4 I think - a 'small fortune' to me in the 60s !! I used my Minor for rallies - many white roads (and occasional ditches....)- so no 'under axle' exhaust for me.....

Years ago I used to run my competition Minor without a silencer and straight through pipe and yes in those days it did not sound excessive to ME but just right. The majority of competition cars now have to have an effective silencer and pass a noise test.
Personally these days I would not run a Minor or any other car without a silencer/ineffective silencer because I want to enjoy the journey though having the right silencer can enhance the driving experience and bring a smile to the face. A bit like adding a tablespoon full of Castrol 'R' to the fuel tank - wonderful!!!!!!
bmc - yes £4 was a lot of money back then especially when an apprentice mechanic start wage was £3.15 a week and the fully qualified mechanics wage was £17.50. Personally I do not think that the prices quoted above are excessive and are to me are about right for what you get at todays prices.
