G'day Guys, I'm trying to re-ring my spare engine, and have hit a problem at the very first ring. The oil control ring (4 of 4) is made up of 4 parts: a thin wavy expander, a castelated spacer and two thin shim rings. I can't for the life of me get this lot to fit together. It's the same sort of setup as I removed, so I think that they're the correct part, is there some trick that I'm missing?
I have a piston ring compressor, and it looks like the expander and spacer will compress, but the shim rings want to move around too much and sit in the slot in the castelated spacer as I'm trying to fit them. They will also need to be trimmed by about 3mm and gapped to fit in the bores, but I can do that ok.
Help! I've spent longer mucking around with this one ring than it took me to remove the engine!

Did you not have a fitting diagram with the new rings?
Can you post a photo of what you have.
Are the rings marked TOP if they are they should be fitted that way up.
When fitting the rings (of what ever type) to the piston having the gaps as per the illustration of piston ring gap location in the link below which will help with fitting and make sure that your piston ring compressor gap is 90 degrees to the ring gaps. Also ensure that the piston ring gaps are not on the thrust sides of the piston when fitting or above the gudgen pin.
See link http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=pic ... s&qpvt+oil control piston rings and there are some good photos and instructions which may be of help.
From your description I have drawn a schematic of how I believe that the various component fit in the piston ring grove.[frame]

Re: Oil Control Piston Ring
Thanks for your reply and diagram. That's exactly the setup I have. I'm sure that the rings are too big. Even with the wavy ring removed, the scrapers protrude way too far. I'm getting in tough with my supplier. Cheers!

You think that the rings are too big. What makes you think that they are too big?
Have you put a ring down the bore and measured the gap between the ends of the ring?
Note:- when having placed the ring in the bore push it down with an inverted piston to get the ring square in the bore then measure the gap.
Have you measured the inner diameter of the piston ring groove and the ID of the piston ring as fitted in the bore to determine the clearance/interference between ring and piston when fitted?
Did you measure the bore before ordering the new pistons/rings to ensure that the ones you have are correct for the bore size?
Are the pistons/bore oversize i.e. having been re-bored?
If you do need to adjust the ring gaps do you have a proper ring gapping tool because if not it is easy to break a ring when re-gapping.
I would measure carefully and think very seriously before cutting or re-gapping any ring. If you cannot determine/find any problem with your engine bores It would be better if you referred the problem back to the supplier /manufacture. There may be a problem with the piston/ring assembly.
