What is underneath the paint on the floor?

Post by TFM150K »

Underneath the paint on the floor of my car and van is what appears to be a black undercoat material which gives the paint a lumpy characteristic. Despite having been there since 1968/1972 it is still pliable - it can be scraped off using a fingernail.
Has anybody got any idea what it is? (Those that know me need not worry - I am not going in for conkers - I am just trying to make a patched bit look roughly the same as the rest of the floor). Any ideas before I am tempted to use an underbody paint? Ta

Matt Blk (under trafalgar blue in the case of the sloon and BS256 in the case of the van - give or take a BS or two cos the inside was done with free paint from a previous job - BS255 1/2 maybe)?

Would you believe red PO vans were BS539 underneath.

What's a "sloon", I've heard of a sloop....but these are seagoing.

What's a "sloona"? Do you mean a schooner - you collect ships as well?

Oh, dear, what have I started?

Getting round to the serious bit, has anyone used bitumastic and painted over the top of it - was it successful? I am a bit wary of leaving a permanently sticky surface.

I would be too - if all the grit and small stones stick then your unladen weight will increase significantly :)

It hardens, doesn't remain sticky.

hi

The original material would have been hot melt bitumen .. applied with a bitumen brush which gave the bobbly/textured finish

If you use a normal bitumen paint it will take some time to dry fully (probably weeks or months)as will a spray underseal such as Tetroseal.

You can buy stick on bitumen sound proofing sheets or use a modern shutz type finish.

If you want to recreate the original 'lumpy' characteristic, use stone chip paint from a spray can. I have done this and the match is spot on. Once dry overspray with body colour. Of course I'm presuming all stone chip paint is similar to the brand I used.

Now we have established it is Finnegans I have been down the workshop and, lo and behold, there was a part used tin. If there is still some puff in it the job will be a freebie! Fingers crossed! Ta, Les.
