Early Minor MM Rear Bumper mounting information

Hello all,
I am trying to find out some information concerning the mounting of the split rear bumper on my 1950 Minor MM.

This car had a later rear bumper installed on it which was incorrect along with cobbled up studs to mount it on that exited through holes that had been drilled in the lower part of the body pressing similar to the way a 1000's bumper arms are.

I have a original rear bumper to fit in place of the incorrect one and am certain I have all the components of it

I found the remains of the original bumper brackets that were trapped between the body and the wings and will be making up a new set .

What I need to know is how the bumper is attached to these original style fabricated bumper brackets. My guess is that there is some form of spacer or stand off between the face of the bracket and the bumper with a bolt through the whole lot.

Can anyone confirm this or even better possibly post a photo with dimensions of the bits?

Any information in this regard would be most appreciated. Thank you.

The brackets at the top were made by Carlo, he may still have a pair available, he is a regular messageboard user so should see this.

Hi thanks for posting. There are actually quite a few Minors in Calgary and the surrounding area. I have a 57 1000 as well as the '50 MM. Both are in a state of dis-assembly.

thanks for your leads on brackets. I don't actually need the brackets just information on the relationship of the bolting face to the bumper itself. Is there a standoff or spacer that is between the bracket and the bumper? If so what does it look like and what would its dimensions be? I have a lathe and milling machine so making them is not a problem.

I dont know the exact way it was originally, the ones on my cars were also missing and I made mine from a cardboard template sent to me by a member of our local branch. Once made and fitted with a big nut and bolt through the bumper iron I used washers to space it out until it sat evenly on each side.

I get the impression from the correspondence that there should be a thick heavy "main spring" as it is referred to in the parts book that the bumper valance and chrome blade are bolted to and the whole assembly is then bolted to the brackets that are mounted between the wings and body.

Can anyone verify this ?

If you post up a picture of the bumper bits you have then we can tell you whats missing. There should be a heavy iron bar the same as is fitted to your later minor bumper and then this is bolted to the brackets.

Ok, it seems that I am missing the heavy iron bar or "main spring"as it is called in the parts books.

Anyone have a picture of this part so I can make one up or modify the one that was on the incorrect bumper?

I'll try to get some pics of what I have on the weekend.

I have salvaged the "spring bar" from the incorrect bumper(the one in this picture) that was on the car and offered it up the the split bumper parts.
It is obvious I will have to reposition the bends on it to have it sit correctly.

Can anyone measure their Minor MM split rear bumper spring blade to let me know where the bends occur? Once I know this information I can work out the bend angles from the measurements.

My MM is in storage at the moment at Steveys garage and he has taken a couple of pics of the rear bumper from the floor. I only vaguely remember the the spring bar was also cut in 2 parts and welded! Once the car is home I can maybe get you some more detailed info. Someone on here though is bound to have a bumper in bits to check for you?!
